Deputy Service Manager

We are seeking a Band 7 Deputy Service Manager to support the operational management of Neurology, Stroke, Elderly Care, Clinical Haematology and Specialist Rehab departments across Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle, West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven and community sites. The role works within a fast‑paced environment supporting the Deputy General Manager across a range of functions including performance target management, patient flow, medical resource management and service delivery.

Main duties

  • Manage key constitutional performance targets and Healthcare Commission standards as delegated.
  • Provide advice and direction to influence service delivery in line with organisational policies and procedures.
  • Lead and contribute to trust‑wide projects or initiatives as requested by the Deputy General Manager.
  • Drive change management processes while ensuring high‑quality, cost‑effective patient care.
  • Communicate service re‑configurations and organisational changes to staff and devise innovative solutions to maintain seamless service provision.
  • Oversee financial management of at least one service function, ensuring expenditure aligns with the budget.
  • Act as deputy for the Deputy General Manager when required.
  • Serve as line manager to designated staff, leading recruitment and managing staff under Trust personnel policies.
  • Promote integrated multidisciplinary working through coordination, communication and promotion of effective collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent.
  • Management diploma or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in essential IT skills (EITS) or equivalent.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution, innovative thinking and ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with HR issues and use of initiative.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to participate in shift operational rota (14:00‑22:00) 7 days per week.
  • Willingness to travel between sites and work across multiple locations.
  • Valid driving licence.
