Job Overview

As a Project Manager at WSP in the PMCM Rail team you will be responsible for enabling the delivery of complex rail projects of regional, national and international significance. Your role ensures that projects are delivered safely, to a high quality, in a timely manner, and within budget.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate relevant disciplines through project meetings and target‑led workshops, enabling critical issues to be resolved in a timely manner and ensuring that projects meet safety, functional and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish robust processes and procedures to manage the project in collaboration with the client’s team.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for the client, ensuring their needs and expectations are met throughout the design and construction phases.
  • Develop and manage client and stakeholder relationships, using effective listening and influencing skills.
  • Compile monthly project reports and data‑based scenarios, providing senior managers with clarity of project position.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, local authorities and community groups.
  • Facilitate regular project meetings, presentations and progress reports.
  • Address stakeholder concerns and manage expectations effectively.
  • Manage contracts in accordance with contract rules of engagement, including NEC3 and NEC4.
  • Manage project budgets, including cost estimation, tracking and reporting.
  • Optimise resource utilisation and ensure financial performance aligns with project goals.
  • Review and approve project expenditures and invoices.
  • Manage changes and delays affecting the project, ensuring issues are resolved or mitigated and that project management processes are continuously improved, e.g. change control.
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with the design and construction phases, establishing risk‑mitigation measures.
  • Handle RFIs, early warnings and general communications to reduce project risk and ensure successful delivery.
  • Serve as a safety leader, driving safety performance and compliance with Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations and discharging CDM duties as required by the client.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted safely and responsibly, adhering to corporate governance and environmental standards.
  • Define project scope, goals and deliverables in collaboration with client and stakeholders.
  • Work with the Planner to develop detailed project plans, including timelines, budgets, resource allocation and risk management.
  • Oversee project execution, ensuring adherence to project plans and schedules.
  • Monitor project progress, identify potential issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Drive innovative design and construction solutions and implement processes to enhance project efficiency and productivity, evaluating and integrating new technologies and methodologies.

Qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant engineering or management discipline (e.g., project or construction management, engineering, science or building).
  • Chartered membership of a relevant professional body, or near completion of this status.
  • Certifications in APM, MSP, PMI, PRINCE2 or Six Sigma, or any combination thereof.
  • Experience managing NEC3/4 contracts.
  • Experience in project management, including technical and project controls.
  • Experience on significant projects with demonstrated client‑side delivery (design and build).
  • Experience working with organisations such as Transport for Wales, Network Rail or similar rail-related entities.
  • Proven ability to manage successful workstreams within a multi‑disciplinary delivery team.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, solution‑focused mindset and responsiveness to client issues.
