Senior Quantity Surveyor (Freelance)

Location: Scotland (Site/Hybrid)

Contract: Freelance

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join a major infrastructure programme in Scotland on a freelance basis. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key commercial role on a complex engineering project, working within a collaborative project team while taking ownership of contractual and commercial matters.

This position requires a strong understanding of the FIDIC suite of contracts, with a particular emphasis on proactive contract administration, variation management and minimising commercial risk before issues develop into formal claims or disputes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer contracts in accordance with FIDIC principles and contractual obligations.
  • Manage and assess variations, ensuring all changes are accurately valued, recorded and agreed.
  • Proactively identify commercial risks and resolve issues before they escalate into claims or disputes.
  • Maintain comprehensive records, contractual notices and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor project costs, forecasts and commercial performance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Work closely with project managers, engineers and client representatives to resolve commercial matters efficiently.
  • Ensure all contractual communications are issued within required timescales.
  • Support negotiations relating to variations, compensation events and commercial settlements.
  • Maintain exceptional attention to detail across all commercial documentation and reporting.
  • Provide commercial advice to support project delivery while protecting contractual entitlement.

About You

The successful candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience working as a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor on major infrastructure or engineering projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of FIDIC contracts, with proven experience administering them throughout project delivery.
  • Demonstrable experience managing variations, contractual notices and commercial risk.
  • A proactive approach to preventing claims and disputes through effective contract management.
  • Excellent commercial awareness and strong analytical skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with excellent record-keeping and documentation practices.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable Industry Experience
