Role Overview

Team Leader in Cardio‑Respiratory and Surgical Therapy Team – Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist – Permanent, 37.5 hours per week (part‑time considered).

You will lead the team with support from your Professional Lead and also maintain a manageable clinical caseload, delivering advanced specialist assessments and interventions for acute cardio‑respiratory and surgical patients, including ICU and ACU. You will provide clinical support to team members and students, assist in training and development, play an integral role in service development, and provide strong leadership to the integrated team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and assistants. Close collaboration with our multidisciplinary team ensures the best outcomes for patients.

We are an integrated department of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians and assistants, working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team and community colleagues.

Main duties

As Team Leader you will:

  • Manage the Cardio‑Respiratory and Surgical Therapy Team and a small complex caseload.
  • Provide advanced assessment to identify appropriate patients and formulate treatment and rehabilitation plans.
  • Support and train team members, students, assistants and Band 5/6 colleagues.
  • Lead team meetings, in‑service development, and training/supervision.
  • Utilise evidence‑based practice projects, audits and outcome measures to evaluate and improve services.
  • Ensure adequate staffing, absence management and staff wellbeing.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and provide the Cardio‑Respiratory and Surgical Integrated Therapy Team, training team members.
  • Lead advanced assessment and treatment of complex patients in ICU and ACU.
  • Use clinical reasoning skills for diagnosis, treatment, referrals and record‑keeping.
  • Plan, coordinate, deliver and evaluate the therapy service; prioritise and delegate appropriately.
  • Manage staff attendance in line with Trust policies, HR and Occupational Health guidance.
  • Support staff wellbeing and signpost to support networks.
  • Collaborate with other therapy teams for referrals and workload prioritisation.
  • Assist in developing team goals with Professional Leads and Integrated Therapies Clinical Lead.
  • Provide specialist advice and teaching to the therapy team and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Stay abreast of new research; identify learning needs and arrange training.
  • Initiate service and personal development, implement appropriate changes.
  • Lead clinical audits and monitor service quality; delegate work as needed.
  • Work the seven‑day roster and participate in the respiratory on‑call rota.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

  • Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy (BSc/MSc).
  • Current Health and Care Professions Council registration.
  • Evidence of relevant postgraduate courses/CPD.
  • Membership of relevant specialist group.
  • Leadership training.
  • Coaching/supervision training.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience at Band 7 or Band 6 level in critical care, cardiology, respiratory and surgery specialities.
  • Experience managing complex patients (COPD, bronchiectasis, respiratory failure, aspiration pneumonia, abdominal surgery, urology surgery, heart failure, ACS, bariatric, critical care).
  • Significant experience working within integrated teams.
  • Experience on the emergency respiratory on‑call rota.
  • Evidence of a range of assessment skills within cardio‑respiratory and surgical clinical areas.
  • Experience planning and implementing service improvement projects.
  • Training and clinical supervision of staff, students and other disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of relevant clinical governance and current NHS topics in cardiology, respiratory and surgery.
  • Demonstrated self‑directional learning and evaluation of own performance.
  • Understanding of legal responsibilities of the profession and implications for therapy services.

Salary

£49,387 to £56,515 a year pro rata.
