Job Introduction

Job Title: Access SpecialistStarting Salary: £25,583 progressing to £28,142 pa pro rata (Actual approx. £17,742 progressing to £19,517 pa) – pay award pending.Hours: 30 hours, Term Time Only (39 weeks).Location: Based at Stevenage or Hemel Hempstead – with travel countywide.Contract: Permanent.Directorate: Childrens Services.

About the Team

We are recruiting an Access Specialist within the Vision Impairment Team to support schools with modification of curriculum resources and activities for children and young people who access their literacy through Braille/tactile diagrams and specialist technology.

About the Role

Work across Hertfordshire under the guidance of the Lead Access Specialists Qualified Teachers of Vision Impairment (QTVI). Provide direct classroom support, prepare teaching materials, model best practice and develop Braille and specialist ICT skills for CYPVI.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce resources in line with the National Curriculum in an accessible format (Braille, audio, concrete materials, 3D models).
  • Mentor and train school-based staff on modifying learning materials for CYPVI.
  • Support staff and pupils training in specialist equipment.
  • Work directly with CYPVI to develop Braille skills and deliver programmes from QTVI.
  • Contribute to planning, monitoring and recording pupil progress.
  • Liaise with school staff and professionals regarding learning materials for children with vision impairment.
  • Undertake mandatory HCC and relevant specialist in-service training.
  • Maintain awareness of current developments to improve service delivery.

Essential Requirements

  • Experience supporting children or young people in learning situations.
  • Willingness to undertake training to learn Braille and pass RNIB Certificate in Contracted Braille (UEB) and VIEW Partners in Learning – Advanced Certificate within two years.
  • GCSE or equivalent – strong numeracy and literacy.
  • Good ICT skills.
  • Well‑organised, able to meet deadlines.
  • Works independently and contributes to a team.
  • Committed to safeguarding, inclusion and ongoing professional development.
  • Full driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Desirable

  • Working knowledge of Braille.
  • Experience working with a child or young person with vision impairment.
