Design & Certification Specialist – Airborne Electronic Hardware and/or Aircraft Systems Development Assurance (5417)

Salary up to £72,000 plus a Market Related supplement (MRS) – dependent upon experience.

Contract Type: Permanent Full time

Security Level: SC

Location: Gatwick / Hybrid

Visa Restrictions: This position does not (currently) offer visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Support the overall business plan and the UK’s ICAO State of Design responsibilities.
  • Accountable for the technical investigation, analysis and approval of certification projects and the continued airworthiness of aircraft, systems, engines and propellers across all civil aerospace domains.
  • Engage with industry representatives remotely and in person, reviewing and approving new parts, products and their design changes.
  • Validate other nations’ certifying authorities’ work and investigate UK Design Organisations’ design approvals.
  • Ensure the CAA is informed of future projects, innovative technologies and proposed regulatory changes.
  • Promote a safety and learning culture that satisfies statutory and international requirements.
  • Act in accordance with CAA HR policies, values and behaviors.
  • Contribute to Personal Development Conversations and create time to learn and develop.
  • Make recommendations for product or change approval through sampling of submitted applicant data, following Level of Involvement principles.
  • Support applications for Flight Conditions, providing recommendations on safety for air and rotorcraft.
  • Ensure aerospace products meet applicable initial and continued airworthiness standards and address in‑service issues.
  • Clarify existing airworthiness requirements and contribute to new requirement development for new technology and novel applications.
  • Act as Project Certification Manager when required and coordinate specialists in specific technical disciplines.
  • Represent the CAA in decision‑making committees, working groups, nationally and internationally.
  • Liaise with other regulators and accident investigation bodies on ICAO Annex 13 investigations or equivalents.

Qualifications

  • Proven knowledge of certification of highly complex systems and their development and integration, including Airborne Electronic Hardware (AEH) and/or Aircraft System Certification.
  • Experience in Stage of Involvement Audits (SOI) and/or System Reviews (SRs) with regulatory bodies.
  • Hands‑on experience with hardware architectures and design processes for FPGAs, ASICs, COTS processor/devices and PDH.
  • Familiarity with avionics communication protocols such as ARINC, AFDX and serial interfaces.
  • Experience conducting SOI audits and applying advanced verification methods.
  • Experience defining scope and leading System Reviews per ARP 4754A/B.
  • Familiarity with safety analysis techniques per ARP 4761 and the derivation of safety objectives.
  • Ability to review and analyze aircraft, system, sub‑system and item architectures concerning safety objectives.
  • Understanding of system life‑cycle processes and interface management for cross‑discipline consistency.
  • Strong analytical and judgment skills, able to challenge assumptions and make timely, reasoned decisions affecting safety.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels, capable of technical discussion and stakeholder engagement.
  • Proficient in report writing and coordination of technical reports.
  • Ability to manage workload across multiple projects with differing priorities.
  • Comfortable operating in diverse cultural and business environments.
  • Motivation to develop experience through project involvement and dedicated training.
  • Eligibility to undergo National Security Vetting (SC clearance) for up to five years of UK residency.

Travel & Security

Both UK and international travel may be required to support audit activities (SOIs and SRs) and technical coordination.

Applicants must be able to undergo National Security Vetting and achieve the appropriate level of clearance (SC).
