Job Description:

The role sits within giffgaff’s broadband engineering space, focusing on backend development to build services and platforms powering seamless, reliable connectivity for members. You’ll design, develop and maintain scalable, fault‑tolerant systems that support everything from hardware interactions to customer‑facing services, ensuring performance and reliability are central to what you deliver.

Working as part of a cross‑functional product engineering team, you’ll collaborate closely with hardware specialists, customer teams and fellow engineers to continuously evolve and improve the platform. The role is primarily backend‑focused, with opportunities to contribute to frontend development when needed, using Java, Spring Boot, AWS on the backend, alongside React and TypeScript on the frontend, within a culture that champions pair programming, test‑driven development and continuous delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain scalable, fault‑tolerant backend services.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to evolve platform architecture.
  • Contribute to frontend development as required.
  • Implement test‑driven practices, pair programming and clean code.
  • Ensure observability and support a “you build it, you run it” mindset.

Qualifications

Must have

  • Strong experience with Java and Spring Boot for backend development.
  • Proven experience in test‑driven development, pair programming and clean coding practices.
  • Solid understanding of system design and building scalable, resilient services.
  • Experience with observability and a “you build it, you run it” mindset.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively within cross‑functional teams.

Other experience that is desirable

  • Experience with event‑driven architecture, microservices or distributed systems.
  • Exposure to frontend development using React or TypeScript.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, Kubernetes or Terraform.
  • Experience in broadband, telecoms or connectivity environments.
  • Interest in emerging technologies such as generative AI and modern engineering practices.
