Apply for the Principal Software Engineer (Python, AI)
Location: London
Job Description:

Summary

Principal‑level role for an experienced engineer with a proven track record at Staff or Principal level. You will set the technical direction for our AI‑enabled platform, architecting secure, scalable, serverless systems on AWS, defining patterns and governance practices, and guiding AI value across the stack.

Responsibilities

  • Shape engineering strategy with broad organizational impact, influencing long‑term architectural direction across multiple teams and products.
  • Drive platform evolution by identifying cross‑cutting pain points and leading the design of secure, scalable, reusable solutions built on AWS and modern serverless / microservice patterns.
  • Lead architectural discussions and design reviews where the stakes are real, making clear trade‑offs around performance, security, reliability, and maintainability and aligning teams with competing priorities.
  • Own AI architectural decisions end‑to‑end: design AI‑enabled systems with built‑in governance, monitoring, and regulatory readiness baked in from the start, defining where AI adds genuine value and where it does not.
  • Act as the organization’s AI thought leader, educating engineering teams on model behaviour, agentic systems, and responsible AI practices, and raising the overall maturity of how we design and deploy AI.
  • Mentor and stretch senior and staff engineers, building technical leadership depth across the organization and holding a high bar for engineering standards.

Essential Qualifications

  • Principal‑level track record at scale: 10+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years operating at Staff or Principal Engineer level in an organization of 100+ engineers. Proven leadership of large, complex platform or AI initiatives where you were the decision‑maker.
  • Deep, opinionated AWS platform expertise: designed multi‑account AWS architectures, made decisions on serverless adoption, and influenced org‑wide patterns for observability, resilience, and security.
  • Production AI systems experience: shipped AI‑enabled systems (RAG pipelines, agentic frameworks, LLM orchestration, etc.) into production and can discuss architectural decisions, failure modes, and trade‑offs.
  • AI governance in practice: defined and implemented AI governance in production environments, including bias and privacy checks, audit‑ready monitoring, and usage policies.
  • API design and backend platform delivery: proven track record designing and shipping RESTful APIs and backend platform components using Node.js/TypeScript, understanding frontend needs to set effective contracts.
  • Organizational communication and influence: align stakeholders on complex technical decisions, run architecture forums, and mentor other senior technical leaders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building platform components or SDKs that multiple product teams depend on, including documentation and enablement work.
  • Involvement in architecture forums, tech councils, or similar bodies that define org‑wide standards.
  • Experience optimizing cost and performance for data and AI‑heavy workloads at scale, including capacity planning and infrastructure tuning.
  • Leadership of major modernization efforts such as legacy migration to serverless, multi‑region architecture, or platform consolidation across product lines.
  • A public technical presence—conference talks, open‑source contributions, published writing—demonstrating thought leadership beyond the current organization.

Benefits

  • Creativity is ingrained in our culture. We are innovative collaborators by nature and thrive in exploring how things can be different in our internal processes and to help our clients.
  • We care about our people. Flexible work environment, global days of service, comprehensive health benefits, meeting‑free days, generous time‑off policy, and wellness programs.
  • We have teams all over the world. Offices in Washington D.C., Vancouver, London, Galway, Budapest, Munich, Bengaluru, Singapore, and Sydney. Hybrid model with onsite requirement of at least 50% of the time for those within commuting distance.
  • Diversity is important to us. We foster and encourage diversity through Employee Resource Groups and provide access to resources and education to support the growth of our team, facilitate dialogue, and foster understanding.
