Job Summary
Work with the Head of Marine: lead the development of strategy, produce the Business Plan, and underwrite the Transport Logistics (TL) account for Chaucer. Manage, mentor and develop the TL underwriting team to secure a global TL leadership position and become the market of choice.
Responsibilities
- Set, own and manage, alongside the Head of Marine, Chaucer’s strategy for the TL business.
- Develop long‑term strategy for the TL business across all platforms and hubs.
- Produce and present Business Plans for underwriting management approval.
- Ensure the TL team underwrites in accordance with Business Plans, Syndicate Guidelines and Compliance requirements.
- Continuously assess and develop TL‑class pricing models.
- Maintain compliance with syndicate systems, Lloyd’s regulations, and byelaws.
- Conduct peer reviews of risks as per the Underwriting Manual.
- Monitor and maintain written premium data on Charisma for all written risks.
- Develop and sustain relationships with brokers to secure new and renewal business flow.
- Maintain and develop relationships with customers to understand risk, retain business, and target new opportunities, including travel when necessary.
- Maintain and develop market profile for Chaucer syndicates and the TL class.
- Monitor portfolio performance, liaising with the Claims Department and reporting as required.
- Track industry and loss trends for the TL class.
- Coordinate strategy with overseas offices and maintain inter‑office communication.
- Monitor premium and pricing levels, aggregations, and aggregation issues.
- Ensure Facultative Reinsurance is purchased per Chaucer guidelines in conjunction with the Head of Marine.
- Collaborate with the Reinsurance Purchasing team on outwards Reinsurance programmes, including renewal submissions.
- Manage relationships with customers, agents, and service providers, advising on insurance and risk matters to promote satisfaction.
- Address customer complaints promptly and refer them appropriately.
- Ensure that Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) principles are upheld by agents and service providers.
Relevant Experience
- Significant relevant marine experience.
- Reasonable levels of underwriting experience.
- Experience leading negotiations with brokers and liaising with clients.
- Understanding of actuarial rating processes.
- Understanding of the business planning process.
Technical Skills
- Microsoft Office – Word and Excel (intermediate level).
Education & Experience
- 5 GCSEs in English and Maths, grade C or above (or equivalent).
- 3 A‑Level passes (or equivalent).
- Lloyds Introductory Test ACII.
