Senior Clinical Hand and Wrist Fellow in Orthopaedics

University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow in Hand and Wrist Surgery. The 12‑month fellowship is supervised by Miss Joanna Higgins and Jeremy Southgate. The post will commence in September 2026; we will consider future opportunities for suitable candidates.

Job Summary

The role is based in the Trauma & Orthopaedic Directorate, working across Bournemouth Hospital, Wimborne Hospital and Poole Hospital. All aspects of elective and traumatic hand and wrist conditions will be covered, including wrist fracture fixation, scaphoid surgery (including non‑union), soft‑tissue hand trauma, arthroplasty of the small joints of the hand, thumb base and wrist, arthroscopic wrist surgery and nerve decompression. There is potential to spend up to two weeks every six months at the Pulvertaft Hand Unit in Derby for congenital hand, flap reconstruction and flexor tendon surgery. The fellowship emphasises training and quality improvement in hand and wrist surgery, with weekend working expected.

About Us

University Hospitals Dorset is investing in services across the Trust, with many being transformed and developed following merger and the New Hospital Programme. Some services may move sites; recruiting managers will address specific questions at interview.

A planned move for this service is anticipated during Winter 2026 when the role and base of work will relocate to Poole Hospital. Upon relocation, excess mileage allowance will not apply and travel between home and work base will be classified as a commute.

Responsibilities

Clinical duties include diagnosing and managing hand and wrist injuries, performing operative procedures, managing postoperative care, and supervising junior staff in line with training programmes. You will lead clinical and specialty service initiatives, manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists, and coordinate with the sub‑specialty team.

Qualifications and Experience

  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Experience in hand and wrist surgery and trauma work
  • Ability to take full independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Greater than 2 years orthopaedic registrar level experience with 6 months hand and wrist experience
  • Experience of working in the NHS for a minimum of 4 months
  • Interest in working towards a hand diploma (desirable)
  • Evidence of audit and research participation (desirable)

Management and Administration Skills

  • Ability to advise on efficient specialty service running
  • Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists
  • Ability to work within a sub‑speciality team
  • Log book evidence of exposure to hand and wrist surgery
  • Evidence of audit management and research projects (desirable)

Teaching and Research

  • Ability to teach and communicate clinical and operative skills
  • Supervise junior staff postgraduate learning programmes
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Interest in postgraduate research or service improvement
  • Evidence of audit management
  • Published works in refereed journals, evidence of audits completed, research in progress and application of research outcomes to clinical problems
