Principal Clinical Psychologist Learning Disabilities

Contract: Permanent, Part time – 30 hours per week

Location: Springleigh Clinic, Town Stalybridge

Salary: £66,582 – £77,368 per annum (pro rata)

Responsibilities

  • Service improvements and development.
  • Development and delivery of training.
  • Conducting research, audit, and evaluation.
  • Development of treatment pathways.
  • Consultation and intervention to CYP in the team.
  • Multi agency working.
  • Clinical supervision and support to psychologists and other staff.
  • Provide clinical leadership and direction within the CAMHS team, ensuring a high‑quality clinical psychology pathway.
  • Lead in care planning for service users, engage families and carers.
  • Perform highly specialist psychological assessments.
  • Provide structured psychological interventions, therapies and group facilitation.
  • Teach, train and supervise clinical psychology trainees.
  • Contribute to research, audit, policy and service development.
  • Manage psychological resources and governance within the care hub.
  • Support staff wellbeing, including debriefs and reflective practice sessions.
  • Promote a trauma‑informed model of care across the hub.
  • Actively participate in recruitment and staff performance reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with national legislation and safeguarding policies.
  • Advocate a person‑centred service philosophy and user/carer involvement.

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications

  • Post‑graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or equivalent prior to 1996) accredited by the BPS.
  • Current registration as a clinical psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council.
  • Completion of further post‑qualification training within psychological therapies (e.g., DBT, CBT, CAT, CFT, MBT).

Experience

  • Clinical leadership experience in a previous role.
  • Provided clinical supervision to psychologists, psychological therapists or other core health professionals.
  • Delivered teaching/training on clinical interventions.
  • Managed demand for psychological services and supported other professionals.

Knowledge

  • National and regional legislation, guidance and policy for psychological therapies with learning disabilities.
  • Safeguarding frameworks for adults.
  • Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
  • Service drivers for learning disability services and transformation.
  • Evidence‑based psychological practices for adults with learning disabilities.
  • Trauma‑informed care principles.
  • Specialised psychological therapies and approaches.
  • CPD evidence as per BPS or other professional body.

Skills and Abilities

  • Computer literacy (word processing, email, internet).
  • Working with service users, carers and families.
  • Consultation skills with other professionals.
  • Effective communication – oral and written – for complex information.
  • Prioritising work, managing waiting lists and deadlines.
  • Capacity to work in constrained positions for assessment and therapy.
  • Professional autonomy and teamwork, including lone‑worker situations.
  • High concentration and resilience in challenging circumstances.
  • Teaching and training delivery across various settings.
  • Physical ability to move equipment as required.
