Platform Engineering Manager | Multi-cloud, Robotics, Kubernetes, Edge Computing, IoT | £100,000 – £120,000 – 1 day per week in Oxford
A high growth technology business is looking for a Platform Engineering Manager to lead a team supporting technology that sits behind a fleet of autonomous robots operating in live warehouse environments.
This is a broad leadership role with responsibility for a team of around 10 engineers across platform, infrastructure and related technical areas. The environment is complex and fast moving, combining cloud infrastructure, developer tooling, observability and edge connected systems. The role will suit someone with a strong platform or infrastructure background who has moved into leadership, but who still enjoys staying close enough to the technical detail to help shape architecture, guide engineers and support delivery in an R&D‑led setting.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and develop a team of c.10 engineers across internal tooling and infrastructure / connectivity.
- Provide technical and architectural direction across platform engineering and developer enablement.
- Support a function working across cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Linux and modern observability tooling.
- Work closely with senior stakeholders across engineering, product and operations.
- Help bring stronger engineering structure and architectural thinking into technically varied environments.
- Contribute to a cloud agnostic approach across AWS and GCP, with an appreciation for edge connected environments.
- Coach engineers and help shape team structure as the function evolves.
Requirements
- Proven experience as an Engineering Manager, Tech Lead Manager or similar technical leadership role.
- Strong background in platform engineering, infrastructure, DevOps or a similarly complex technical domain.
- Experience leading teams of roughly 5–15 engineers.
- Solid understanding of architecture, cloud infrastructure and modern platform.
- Experience with technologies such as AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, CI/CD and Linux.
- Strong knowledge of observability and monitoring tools such as Grafana, Datadog and Prometheus.
- Any background in IoT, edge computing, embedded or hardware‑adjacent environments would be highly beneficial.
- A builder mindset, with openness to AI tooling and modern ways of improving engineering productivity.
Why this role is interesting
This is an opportunity to join a business solving technically unusual problems in a setting that goes beyond a standard SaaS platform environment. It would suit someone who enjoys leading good engineers, staying close to architecture and working in an environment where pace, pragmatism and adaptability matter.
