Our client is a well-established manufacturing business based in Wakefield and is currently looking to recruit a Mechanically Biased Maintenance Engineer to join their engineering team on a permanent basis.
The Role
This is a varied and hands‑on role that combines traditional maintenance engineering with workshop-based engineering activities, fabrication work and machinery projects. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining factory equipment while also supporting machinery modifications, installations and future engineering projects across the site.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) across factory equipment
- Respond to reactive breakdowns and minimise downtime
- Diagnose and repair mechanical faults efficiently
- Maintain and repair mechanical systems including gearboxes, bearings, shafts, drive systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems
- Conduct basic electrical fault finding where required
- Support machinery installations, upgrades and engineering improvement projects
- Assist with machine builds and equipment modifications
- Use workshop machinery and machine shop tools to manufacture, modify and repair components
- Carry out fabrication work to support maintenance and project activities
- Complete maintenance documentation and records
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with health and safety procedures
Essential Requirements
- Mechanically biased Maintenance Engineer background
- Strong mechanical fault‑finding and repair skills
- Experience within manufacturing, engineering or workshop environments
- Experience using workshop machinery and machine shop equipment such as lathes
- Ability to manufacture, modify and repair components
- Fabrication experience or a strong practical engineering background
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small engineering team
- Good understanding of health and safety procedures
- Apprentice trained or time‑served engineer preferred
Desirable Experience
- Electrical qualifications or electrical maintenance experience
- Basic electrical fault finding on motors, drives, sensors and control panels
- Welding and fabrication experience
- Experience supporting machinery installations and build projects
- Experience manufacturing replacement parts and components
