Job Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic Trainee Sonographer to join our Ultrasound Department at Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton. The role involves performing and reporting ultrasound examinations in accordance with Trust scanning protocols and training towards achieving a PgC in Obstetric and Gynaecological Ultrasound.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

You will be part of a small team of sonographers, working closely with the Regional Fetal Medicine team, Obstetricians, and Gynaecologists. Deliver high‑standard examinations, provide patient care, and participate in research, audit, and sub‑specialisation opportunities.

What You’ll Do

Perform routine and complex obstetric and gynaecological scans to support antenatal and gynaecology outpatients, oncology, Post‑Menopausal Bleeding clinics, and the Emergency pregnancy unit. Scan and report autonomously while being supported for further development and training.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria

  • Able to complete an appropriate Postgraduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound Leadership or management course or qualification.
  • Registered Healthcare Professional on relevant part of NMC / HCPC register. Knowledge of other departments work practice with which radiology has a significant interface.
  • Appropriate relevant Degree at 2:2 or equivalent. Appropriate post qualification experience in imaging.
  • Relevant clinical courses.
  • Quality assurance supervision and practice.
  • Sound knowledge of all areas of Governance including H&S, COSHH, Manual Handling.
  • Experience of teaching, mentoring, and supporting colleagues training and development.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to distressed patients and staff and distressing circumstances e.g. suspected physical abuse, major trauma, cancer and death.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
