Apply for the Founding Engineer — Research (up to £150k)
Location: London
Job Description:

Dex partners with an applied AI lab that builds society-level simulations to help governments and policymakers tackle complex challenges. The lab is extending the frontier of LLMs and simulations in policy and social sciences, backed by leading investors.

The role

As a Founding Engineer, you’ll bridge research and production. You’ll benchmark models on new policy problems, build specialized research agents, and own the entire AI/ML layer end-to-end. This role offers a rare opportunity to apply research that actually ships, not just publish papers, and to be deeply involved in user research to ensure solutions solve real problems.

The work

  • Design and build novel benchmarks for simulations across diverse policy problems.
  • Develop specialized research agents for social and economic policy applications.
  • Own the full AI/ML lifecycle: from data pipelines and model selection to inference infrastructure and monitoring.
  • Translate research insights into robust, production-ready systems.
  • Ground your work in user needs by participating in customer calls and user research.

What You Bring

  • 2–3 years of experience building ML systems in production (startup, lab, or product team) or applied ML/statistics research.
  • Strong Python skills, modern ML tooling proficiency, and experience fine‑tuning models.
  • A track record of taking research ideas to working systems, with a clear view on practical application versus hype.
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity and the gap between model capability and user reliability.
  • A genuine interest in public‑sector problems and their real‑world impact.
