Engineering Project Manager – Automation

£60k plus benefits

East Midlands – commutable from Nottingham, Leicester and Coventry

Our client can demonstrate almost half a century’s expertise in the design, development and manufacture of bespoke automation and robotic systems, and are regarded by many in the industry as one of the leading automation system solution providers in the whole of the UK. As a result of continued success and a planned programme of strategic growth, they are now seeking to recruit an experienced Engineering Project Manager to oversee the activities of a highly professional solutions division and lead the delivery of a range of exciting special purpose machinery‑based projects ranging from £200k to £2m each.

Based near Leicester and tasked with ensuring the successful completion of multiple assigned projects both on time and within budget, you will manage the scope of all projects and control any deviations as necessary, communicating effectively at every stage of the project with the customer and operating as the technical lead for projects to ensure a consistent high standard of machine design through to project delivery.

You will be responsible for the accurate planning of resources to ensure that projects can be completed successfully and will create quotes for and agree upgrades outside of the scope of projects as required, managing the resolution of any issues that may arise at various stages and planning appropriate aftersales support as well as ensuring safe working practices are adhered to and relevant documentation and CE certification are presented to the customer at the handover of each project.

Other responsibilities for this varied and challenging role will include maintaining and updating specifications as necessary, defining and controlling budgets, completing project plans and attaining design approval with full customer agreement, planning and leading internal design reviews to ensure the highest standards of machine design, actively developing and driving product development and standardisation programs across the portfolio of solutions and successfully completing IAT, FAT and SAT on every project machine.

You will approve and handover mechanical and controls BOMs to the purchasing teams and agree dates whilst identifying potential cost savings for manufactured and bought‑out items and ensure that customer information and component requirements are clear and arrive on time before arranging the delivery and installation of projects as required.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the activities of the solutions division and lead delivery of special purpose machinery projects.
  • Manage project scope, control deviations, and communicate effectively with customers at every stage.
  • Act as the technical lead to maintain high standards of machine design through to delivery.
  • Accurately plan resources to ensure project success within time and budget constraints.
  • Create quotes and agree upgrades outside the original project scope as required.
  • Resolve issues arising at various stages and plan appropriate after‑sales support.
  • Ensure safe working practices, compile relevant documentation, and present CE certification at handover.
  • Maintain and update specifications, define and control budgets, and complete project plans.
  • Obtain design approval with full customer agreement.
  • Plan and lead internal design reviews to uphold the highest standards.
  • Develop and drive product development and standardisation programmes across the solutions portfolio.
  • Successfully complete IAT, FAT and SAT on every project machine.
  • Approve and handover mechanical and controls BOMs to purchasing teams, agreeing dates and identifying potential cost savings.
  • Ensure component information and requirements reach the supply chain on time, arranging delivery and installation as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven project management skills and experience.
  • Background that includes substantial exposure to PLC control software.
  • Experience with multi‑axis robotic systems within a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with customers and cross‑functional teams.
  • Strong understanding of budget control, procurement and cost‑saving strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills and a commitment to safety and documentation.
