Project Engineer – Electrical (BESS & Substation Projects)

Location: Kent → Doncaster

Voltage Experience: 33kV & 132kV

Sector: Energy / ICP / Power Infrastructure

A leading ICP operating within the energy and power infrastructure sector is looking to appoint an experienced Electrical Project Engineer to support delivery across a live BESS and substation project in Kent, with a planned transition onto a subsequent project in Doncaster.

This is a key site-based engineering role, with a strong focus on technical assurance, contractor coordination, and delivery of high-voltage works in line with GAT1 specifications, DNO requirements, and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical & Design Assurance
    • Review and provide feedback on drawings, SLDs, schematics, protection studies, and cable calculations
    • Ensure compliance with:
      • GAT1 specifications
      • Relevant DNO requirements
      • ENA / IEC / BS standards
    • Identify and resolve design issues, inconsistencies, and non-compliances with contractors
    • Validate specifications for key equipment including switchgear, transformers, protection relays, SCADA systems, and BESS components
  • Construction & Commissioning Oversight
    • Provide on-site engineering support through installation, commissioning, and energisation phases
    • Ensure works are delivered in line with approved designs and installation standards
    • Oversee HV/LV cabling, earthing systems, equipment install, civil/electrical interfaces, protection & control integration
    • Conduct pre-energisation inspections and readiness checks
    • Support FAT/SAT, commissioning, and handover processes
  • Contractor Coordination
    • Act as the technical interface between civils, electrical, OEMs, and control system contractors
    • Ensure alignment across all parties with design quality and approvals, programme and documentation timelines, DNO-approved connection requirements, and installation and testing standards
    • Manage and challenge contractors on technical issues and drive resolutions
    • Support progress meetings, design reviews, and risk workshops
  • Compliance & Documentation
    • Ensure works comply with CDM, HSE regulations, and site safety protocols
    • Maintain engineering records including TQs, NCRs, change control, and project logs
    • Support delivery of O&M manuals, as-builts, and handover documentation

Requirements

  • Electrical Engineering qualification (HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent experience)
  • Proven experience working on 33kV and/or 132kV projects
  • Strong understanding of: Substations and grid connections, BESS projects, HV equipment, protection systems, and SCADA
  • Experience working alongside or interfacing with DNOs
  • Ability to manage multiple contractors and technical interfaces
  • Proactive and detail-focused approach to site engineering
