Position

Trading Standards Officer (level 6 trainee) – Place & Economic Growth Directorate, Trading Standards and Animal Welfare.

Contract and Salary

Fixed Term until 31st March 2029. Salary £28,598 to £31,022 per annum (Grade 4).

Hours

36.66 hours per week, flexible hot desking / home working and field-based work.

Role Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, committed, and motivated trainee to enforce vape, cigarettes, and tobacco legislation, and other trading standards duties, working as part of a dedicated team that protects consumers and supports businesses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake a Level 6 Trading Standards Professional Apprenticeship (max 29 months). Attend off‑site training as needed.
  • Under supervision of qualified staff, contribute to the Trading Standards service priorities, especially regulation of vapes, cigarettes, and tobacco products.
  • Take enforcement action in line with Council’s Enforcement Policy, seeking advice from qualified staff, to maintain public confidence.

Requirements

  • Good standard of education and aptitude to study towards a professional qualification.
  • Interest in consumer protection, fair trading, and public health protection.
  • Aptitude to work with minimum supervision and as part of a team.
  • Self‑motivated, organisational skills, attention to detail, positive, flexible, can‑do attitude.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills, patience, ability to remain calm in challenging circumstances.
