Job Overview

We are looking to recruit a Locum Consultant to our Community Paediatric team in Newham for 2026. This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic team within a multidisciplinary Community Child Health service in East London. The role will focus on Social pediatrics, working closely with the named Dr for Children in Care and the named Dr for Child Protection. The post will suit a newly qualified consultant who is looking to gain experience in Social pediatric work at a senior level.

Main Duties

The Post Holders will be expected to work within the multidisciplinary team to provide a comprehensive community paediatric service within specialist Children & Young People’s Services and will include responsibilities in the following areas:

  • Clinical activities:
    • Consultant clinics and related administrative work
    • Clinical triage of referrals
    • Clinical supervision as “Consultant of the Day” including child protection
    • MDT clinical discussions or meetings
    • Any clinical patient‑related meetings
  • Teaching:
    • Contribute to departmental teaching
    • Contribute to teaching of medical students, particularly in relation to community child health services
  • Management and leadership:
    • Clinical supervision
    • Clinical governance
    • Management supervision
    • Pathway leadership
  • Audit, quality improvement and service development

Person Specification

Essential Criteria – Training and Registration

  • MBBS
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • GMC registration
  • CCT in general paediatrics or within 6 months of CCT
  • In process of applying for specialist registration via portfolio pathway

Desirable Criteria – Training and Registration

  • BSc in a medical subject
  • MSc in a medical subject
  • PhD
  • CCT in community child health

Essential Criteria – Clinical Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of carrying out and supervising child protection medical assessments
  • Experience of carrying out and supervising children in care medical assessments
  • 4+ years of general professional training in paediatrics
  • Up‑to‑date with Level 3 competencies in child protection
  • At least 1 year experience of UK community paediatrics

Desirable Criteria – Clinical Knowledge and Experience

  • Competent in autism assessment – ADOS or 3Di training
  • Trained in use of Griffiths or Bayley for developmental assessment
  • Experience in assessing and managing complex children with neurological and developmental problems

Essential Criteria – Medical Management and Leadership

  • Experience of supervision of resident/SAS doctors
  • Experience of productive MDT working

Desirable Criteria – Medical Management and Leadership

  • Completed management course
  • Experience of complaint handling

Essential Criteria – Quality Improvement

  • Completed QI project with proven benefit

Desirable Criteria – Quality Improvement

  • Quality improvement training
  • Experience of co‑production with service users

Essential Criteria – Teaching

  • Experience of undergraduate paediatric teaching
  • Experience of postgraduate paediatric teaching

Desirable Criteria – Teaching

  • Has undertaken training in education methods

Essential Criteria – Communication Skills

  • Good verbal skills
  • Ability to empathise with people from different backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents and children

Desirable Criteria – Communication Skills

  • Evidence of championing diversity in the workplace
