Job Summary

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to apply for a Senior Assistant Technical Officer to work with the Trials Pharmacy Team at the Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH) site, with cross‑site working required.

The successful applicant will manage the clinical trial medicines dispensed to patients recruited to clinical trials within the Trust. This role offers the chance to work with a dynamic, multidisciplinary team supporting the provision of reception and dispensing services within the Trials Pharmacy.

The role requires someone eager to learn, able to organise and prioritise their work to meet deadlines and to work using their own initiative.

The successful candidate must have a NVQ level 2 certificate in Pharmacy service skills or equivalent and must indicate this on the relevant course details within the application.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

  • To perform a variety of general pharmacy duties under the supervision of a pharmacist or technician in all aspects of clinical trials medicine management including ordering, receipting, deliveries, dispensing and temperature monitoring of clinical trial medicines.
  • To be involved in maintaining financial records, completing drug accountability activities and networking with research teams across the trust and with external representatives.
  • To be able to deal with enquiries in an efficient, polite and courteous manner, providing a caring and helpful service to other members of staff, patients and the general public.

You will lead in providing excellent customer service, acting as a role model to other members of the dispensary team.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • GCSE grade C/4 or above in Mathematics and English (or equivalent)
  • NVQ level 2 Certificate in Pharmacy Service Skills (QCF), BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Pharmaceutical Science
  • Accredited Dispensing Assistants Course (NPA)

Experience

Essential

  • Post NVQ level 2 qualification developmental experience of a range of dispensing with formal training and annual revalidated accreditation as a dispenser
  • Understanding of pharmacy related computer systems
  • Understanding of Health and Safety at Work, manual handling and COSHH
  • Understanding of dispensing, stock control and supply systems and processes
  • Knowledge of stock control systems
  • Knowledge of code of practice/customer care
  • Understands the need for delivering a cost effective service and the required work practices to reduce waste

Desirable

  • Previous experience within a Hospital Pharmacy setting
  • Experience in staff training
  • Working knowledge of JAC pharmacy system
  • Knowledge of drugs, side effects & where to find further information

Pay Scheme

Agenda for Change – Band 3 – £25,760.00 to £27,476.00 yearly.
