Job Summary
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Band 3 full‑time Medical Secretary Supervisor to join our friendly secretarial team within the Urology Department at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The post will be based on Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham site. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who relishes a challenge and is keen to use their own initiative. The successful candidate will be a key member of the Secretarial Team, providing a professional and high‑quality secretarial and administrative service at all times. The role involves significant audio typing and use of medical terminology.
Responsibilities and Skills
Key duties include:
- Managing day‑to‑day admin, including booking admissions/appointments and importing documentation into electronic patient records.
- Audio typing letters, liaising with patients and colleagues both internally and externally, and supporting the clinical team.
- Planning workload proactively to support the busy department.
- Managing waiting lists and working within the RTT pathway.
Required skills: excellent touch‑typing and audio typing, good knowledge of medical terminology, experience with medical secretarial work, superior organisational and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Qualifications
- Good General Education: GCSE English and Maths (Level 9‑4).
- Business Administration NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience in a clerical environment.
Desirable Qualifications
- AMSPAR Certificate or equivalent qualification or equivalent knowledge of medical terminology.
Experience
- Public/Customer service experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience using IT systems.
Desirable Experience
- Work experience in a busy environment.
- Work experience in healthcare.
