Job overview

We are looking to recruit motivated, caring, compassionate individuals for the role of Apprentice Healthcare Support Workers.

The Apprenticeship programme offers a full‑time 18‑month fixed‑term contract that in most cases leads to a permanent position with CHFT.

Applicants must be aged 18 or over on the date of starting and have lived in the UK for at least 3 years prior to enrolment.

You MUST NOT hold a degree, level four qualification or above in a health‑related subject.

You must not have significant healthcare experience.

Required qualifications:

  • Care Certificate
  • BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Care
  • English and Maths GCSE at grades 9 – 1 / A*–G or equivalent

Applicants should be able to provide valid certificates or demonstrate these qualifications at interview.

Training and support will be provided by a Vocational Trainer.

We are recruiting a cohort planned to start in September 2026, therefore candidates must be available to start promptly.

Interviews will be held week commencing 6th July.

Main duties of the job

Additional details and preferences may be discussed at interview. You may be allocated to Calderdale Royal Hospital or Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

You must have the ability to work under pressure and possess excellent communication skills with a genuine interest in caring for people.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide personal care to patients
  • Assist with nutritional needs
  • Monitor the health and well‑being of patients in your care
  • Assist and support with procedures as required
  • Effective communication with patients, visitors and staff

Shifts are rotational and may include nights, evenings, weekends, and early shifts starting at 7 am. Some departments may operate Monday to Friday only.

Person specification

Knowledge, experience & expertise

  • Commitment to working in the caring profession
  • Less than 12 months’ experience in a care setting
  • A desire to make a difference to patients’ lives
  • Evidence of kindness and compassion or caring on a personal or professional basis demonstrated within application
  • Understanding of record‑keeping, including use of electronic systems such as Nerve Centre

Qualifications & Training

  • English GCSE grade 9 – 1 / A*–G (or equivalent)
  • Must NOT hold a Level 4 qualification or above in a health‑related subject
  • Committed to completing the Healthcare Support Worker Intermediate Apprenticeship
  • Good English skills in application

Communication & Relationships

  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Ability to work in a busy environment
  • Able to work under direction
  • MUST have lived in the UK for 3 years
