Job overview
We are looking for a motivated and compassionate individual to join our Paediatric Diabetes Team, supporting the care of approximately 230 children and young people living with Type 1 Diabetes. Working closely with our experienced Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses, you will play an important role in delivering high‑quality, child‑centred care. Under supervision, you will support a varied caseload and, once trained and assessed as competent, take on routine and extended responsibilities that contribute to the smooth and efficient running of our Paediatric Diabetes clinics.
Responsibilities
- Support the management of a caseload of children and young people with Type 1 Diabetes.
- Carry out routine and extended clinical duties, in line with your training and competency.
- Work under the guidance of the nurse in charge and the Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses.
- Help ensure clinics run smoothly and efficiently, providing a positive experience for patients and families.
- Take a lead role in the efficient and smooth running of Paediatric Diabetes Clinics at RUH, Frome Medical Centre and Chippenham Community Hospital.
- Prepare for clinics; ensure all equipment is in good working order and ready for use; take any relevant educational material; set up ahead of time to ensure clinic starts on time.
- Perform HbA1c blood tests for each child attending clinic using Point of Care testing equipment.
- Maintain stock of equipment and materials and ensure quality control and calibration of equipment.
- Demonstrate good housekeeping techniques and correct disposal of sharps, report hazards, take positive action to reduce any risks within own capability; assist in cleaning and maintenance of department areas, clinical equipment and stock levels; report faults, breakages or missing items.
- Undertake general clerical duties associated with the smooth running of the department; upkeep of notice and information boards.
- Assist Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse (PDSN) in delivering diabetes training to other agencies.
- Assist in downloading data from blood glucose meters, sensor glucose meters and insulin pumps using appropriate downloading platforms and software.
- Make follow‑up phone calls to families who did not bring their child to a clinic appointment and liaise with team administrator re follow‑up arrangements.
- Be competent to perform blood glucose and blood ketone checks and interpret readings; to teach others to undertake blood glucose and blood ketone checking and insulin injections.
- Support the insertion of sensors via sterile procedure and support Flash Glucose/Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and MyLife technology starts.
- Demonstrate and support the set‑up of glucose monitoring systems, readers and apps; demonstrate how to video call; demonstrate how to download and send clinical information.
- Make relevant and necessary decisions on substitute meters, finger‑pricking and glucose reading devices and analyse data and results accordingly.
- Take on responsibilities of the team administrator during annual leave and sickness to ensure a smooth running of the service.
- Manage own time effectively and perform allocated tasks within a reasonable time frame; seek support, assistance and advice from other team members when needed.
- Maintain stock of equipment and materials, quality control and calibration of equipment.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience within the NHS or other care settings.
- Experience of producing correspondence to a consistently accurate and professional standard.
- Experience of working in paediatrics.
- Knowledge of Type 1 Diabetes.
- Examples of good time management.
- Full driver’s licence and own car.
- Examples of quick learning.

- Good communication style.
- Experience of working with patients.
- A commitment to delivering compassionate, high‑quality care.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Access to a car, as the role includes clinics in Frome and Chippenham.
