Speech & Language Therapy Assistant Practitioner

Type: Permanent, Part‑time (22.5 hours per week)

We are seeking an enthusiastic and compassionate Assistant Practitioner to join our Adult Community Speech and Language Therapy service. The successful applicant will work alongside experienced SLTs, supporting adults with communication and swallowing difficulties in outpatient settings, care homes, and community homes.

Main duties

• Carry out assessments and deliver therapy programmes for adults with communication and swallowing difficulties.
• Prepare resources such as communication books and support patients with alternative communication aids.
• Support SLTs with assessment and use of high‑tech communication devices.
• Provide education and training to patients and families on communication technology.
• Make onward referrals to support organisations.
• Conduct reviews of patients who have received equipment from the AAC Centre.
• Carry out administrative tasks, accurate entries in electronic medical records, and contribute to audit activity.
• Participate in ongoing CPD, supervision, appraisal, and training.

Qualifications

• GCSE level C or equivalent in literacy and numeracy.
• NVQ level 3/City & Guilds in Health & Social Care or equivalent experience.

Experience and skills

• Significant experience as a therapy support worker or healthcare assistant.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with patients and carers.
• Experience working in a multi‑disciplinary NHS team.
• Experience as an SLT assistant with adults.
• Experience with high‑tech communication devices and software.

Professional knowledge

• Knowledge of the Speech & Language Therapy profession.
• Awareness of strategies supporting speech, language and communication difficulties.
• Ability to perform therapeutic mouth care on nil by mouth patients.
