Senior Medical Secretary

The Senior Medical Secretary provides an efficient and comprehensive professional secretarial service to consultants, their team, and the wider department. The role requires initiative and independent judgement while maintaining a high level of confidentiality and diplomacy at all times.

Under current Home Office Immigration Rules, this role does not meet the UK Visas and Immigration criteria. Sponsorship is not available. Applications from candidates requiring skilled worker sponsorship will not be shortlisted.

Main Duties

  • Typing clinic letters, operation notes, pre‑operative notes, ward notes, discharge letters, specialist reports and conference notes.
  • Processing these documents through audio dictation or shorthand dictation and distributing them to relevant healthcare professionals and patients, ensuring accurate and timely delivery.
  • Using the Trust’s computer systems for all secretarial tasks, including managing electronic and paper diaries for consultants and their team.
  • Sending and receiving confidential patient information to and from other healthcare organisations, patients, carers and relatives.
  • Coordinating on‑call rotas with the consultant and team.
  • Processing incoming mail and ensuring all referrals and internal referrals are passed to the appropriate booking team.
  • Handling telephone calls into the hospital as the first point of contact.
  • Regularly checking the digital dictation system for urgent work and prioritising workload accordingly.

Qualifications / Training

  • RSA Level 3
  • English and maths GCSEs or equivalent
  • Shorthand 100 wpm
  • AMSPAR diploma
  • ECDL/NVQ

Experience

  • Relevant medical secretarial experience

Skills / Knowledge

  • Good knowledge of medical terminology

Salary

£28,392 to £31,157 per annum pro rata.
