About the Role

The role of Higher Family Support Worker is to engage family members proactively, develop family‑level relationships, and enhance capacity for families to work towards meeting identified needs. You will attend training, partner with the social work service and other professionals, and develop jointly agreed objectives with families. You will write reports and provide summary updates measuring progress and challenges. This is a case holding role, working full‑time Monday‑Friday on a flexible basis and requires access to a car.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver evidence‑based interventions to achieve good parenting outcomes that safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.
  • Undertake the required training to support you in your role, including assessment training.
  • Complete assessments for children and their families to aid care planning, including discharges of care orders, placement with parents and reunification individually or through co‑working with other professionals.
  • Work collaboratively with families, social care colleagues and partner agencies to provide timely, targeted support – aiming to reunite care arrangements for children and young people within their families.
  • Champion a specialist practice area (e.g. domestic abuse, parental conflict, mental health, trauma or substance misuse) by delivering workshops and providing advice to colleagues.
  • Maintain high standards of record keeping and produce clear, accountable reports to evidence impact.
  • Support social work teams by implementing targeted interventions and ensuring practice is clearly evidenced on children’s records.
  • Promote Birmingham Children’s Trust’s relationship‑based, strengths‑focused, family‑led practice model in all aspects of your work.

About You

  • Hold an NVQ Level 4 (or equivalent) qualification in a related area of practice.
  • Have a full driving licence and access to your own car.
  • Have proven experience working in early help, prevention or statutory services with children and families.
  • Be confident working under pressure, managing competing demands and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, report writing, assessment and record‑keeping skills.
  • Bring experience of multi‑agency working, ensuring families receive joined‑up and effective support.
  • Be a strong team player who shares knowledge and supports colleagues to deliver the best possible outcomes.

Benefits

  • We pay your Social Work England registration fee.
  • We pay your DBS application fee and reimburse your update service fee.
  • A generous annual leave package of 30 days plus bank holidays, rising to 33 days after 5 years of service and 35 days after 10 years.
  • Salary Sacrifice Car Scheme – drive a brand‑new car for an affordable fixed monthly amount with no deposits or credit checks.
  • Free on‑site parking at our offices on One Avenue Road (Aston) and Lifford House (Stirchley) and free use of onsite electric car charging ports.
  • Full access to our internal employee benefits scheme, including Occupational Health services, Rewards Schemes, Benefits discounts (including the Blue Light Card), Health & Fitness and Personal Wellbeing support.
  • Flexible and hybrid working policy – a combination of time spent in the office and at home with a variety of working patterns.
  • Local Government pension scheme in line with the Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Discounted gym memberships with Pure Gym and Nuffield Health.

Why Join Us?

  • Impactful work – be part of a team that makes a real difference in the lives of the city’s most vulnerable children.
  • Supportive environment – enjoy a supportive and collaborative work culture where your contributions are valued.
  • Career development – benefit from tailored development programmes, supportive supervision and a range of learning opportunities.
  • Generous benefits – competitive reward package including generous leave allowance, Local Government pension scheme and additional benefits.

Safeguarding

Depending on the role, you may be asked to undergo the appropriate level of Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. We are committed to the fair treatment of all applicants, including those with criminal records. Having a criminal record will not necessarily bar an individual from working with us but the decision depends on the nature of the position and circumstances of the offence.

We reserve the right to close the job early if we reach the required number of applications. Please submit your application and supporting statement early to avoid disappointment.
