The post holder will work as an independent, specialist cardiac physiologist, delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred services across a wide range of non‑invasive and invasive cardiac diagnostic investigations. They will be responsible for the performance, analysis, and reporting of complex diagnostic tests, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely patient care.

The role will be primarily based within Cardiac Suite 6 and the Cardiac Catheter Laboratories, with flexible working required to meet service demands. A collaborative, cross‑functional team approach is essential for efficient service delivery.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop specialist expertise in Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET), interventional and structural cardiology, and complex cardiac rhythm management (CRM), with ongoing professional development support.

The post holder will demonstrate strong organisational skills, flexibility, and reliability, and commit to teaching and supporting junior staff and students. Rotation across cardiac physiology services is required to maintain competencies, alongside participation in the emergency on‑call rota, including primary angioplasty and emergency arrhythmia pathways.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide a high‑quality cardiac physiology service across a wide range of investigations, including ambulatory monitoring, exercise testing, CPET, and head‑up tilt testing, with responsibility for accurate analysis and reporting.

They will support complex cardiac catheter laboratory activity, including diagnostic, interventional, and structural procedures, and participate in the primary angioplasty on‑call rota and emergency arrhythmia pathway.

The role includes specialist support for cardiac rhythm management services, including device implantation, follow‑up, and optimisation (pacemakers, ICDs, CRT), alongside contribution to remote monitoring services.

The post holder will manage and prioritise clinical workload, support inpatient triage, and ensure high standards of documentation, patient safety, and clinical governance. They will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and contribute to service development, quality improvement, and resource management.

In addition, the role includes supervision, teaching, and support of junior staff and students, alongside a commitment to continuous professional development, audit, and clinical excellence.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Technical and Service Delivery

  • The post‑holder will deliver a high‑quality, patient‑centred cardiac physiology service across a broad range of non‑invasive and invasive diagnostic modalities, demonstrating advanced clinical competence, sound judgement, and professional accountability.
  • Perform, analyse, and report ambulatory ECG monitoring, including event recorders, alongside resting and ambulatory blood pressure studies, ensuring accurate interpretation and timely reporting in line with departmental and national standards.
  • Supervise and support advanced diagnostic investigations, including ETT, CPET, and HUTT, taking responsibility for accurate analysis and reporting of findings in accordance with local and national guidelines.
  • In the cardiac catheterisation laboratory, support and document haemodynamic monitoring and procedural activity across diagnostic, interventional and structural procedures (PCI, IVUS, OCT, shockwave therapy, rotablation, IABP, Impella, TAVI, MitraClip/TEER, LAAO and PFO closure). Ensure precise procedural recording and contribute to maintaining high standards of patient safety and clinical governance.
  • Participate in the primary angioplasty on‑call rota and/or emergency arrhythmia pathway, contributing to urgent and life‑saving cardiac services.
  • Provide specialist physiologist support across a range of cardiac device procedures, including loop recorder implantation and explantation, pacemaker implantation, and complex cardiac device procedures (ICD and CRT systems), as well as generator replacements. Actively manage follow‑up and remote monitoring to ensure safe, effective, and patient‑centred care.
  • Independently programme and optimise complex cardiac devices, including conduction system pacing (LBBaP), ICD, and CRT systems, ensuring optimal device function and therapeutic delivery. Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation within electronic patient records.
  • Demonstrate strong organisational and prioritisation skills, managing workload across competing clinical demands, and ensuring timely delivery of investigations and reports.
  • Support triage and prioritisation of inpatient referrals, liaising with ward teams and multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure appropriate allocation of resources.
  • Contribute to effective stock control and resource management within the department, working alongside senior physiologists to ensure efficient use of consumables and engagement with suppliers.
  • Actively contribute to departmental meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and service development, demonstrating a proactive approach to enhancing clinical standards, efficiency, and patient experience.
  • Support and guide junior staff, exercising initiative and clinical judgement, while recognising when escalation to senior colleagues is required.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical records, contributing to data collection and reporting processes to support audit, research, and service evaluation.
  • Collaborative and flexible approach, working closely with multidisciplinary team colleagues, recognising the wider objectives of the Cardiac Department and the organisation as a whole, and contributing positively to a supportive team environment.

Educational and Supervisory

  • Actively engage in the Band 6 staff development programme, demonstrating a commitment to continuous professional growth and the development of advanced clinical and leadership skills.
  • Provide specialist technical and clinical advice to colleagues, junior staff and students, promoting best practice while recognising the boundaries of the role and appropriately escalating complex issues when required.
  • Supervise and mentor junior physiologists, including PTP and STP trainees, fostering a supportive learning environment and promoting high standards of clinical practice, professional behaviour and accountability.
  • Contribute to education and training across the Trust, supporting the development of medical students, PTP and STP trainees and other healthcare professionals, ensuring delivery of high‑quality, structured learning experiences.
  • Maintain personal competence by keeping up to date with current national guidelines, emerging technologies and best practice within cardiac physiology. Attend relevant courses, conferences and study days to support ongoing continuous professional development (CPD).
  • Ensure all mandatory training requirements are maintained in line with Trust policy and regulatory standards.
  • Actively participate in annual appraisal and personal development planning processes, demonstrating a proactive approach to achieving professional goals and enhancing clinical expertise.
  • Maintain relevant clinical accreditation and be supported to work towards additional accreditation where appropriate, including progressing towards STP equivalence and maintaining active membership with recognised professional bodies.
  • Contribute to the advancement of the profession through case studies, audit work and clinical abstracts, with opportunities to present findings at conferences and submit work for publication in peer‑reviewed journals.

Person specification

Education and qualifications

  • Either BSc in Cardiac Physiology or equivalent, BSc in Healthcare Science (PTP) – Clinical Cardiac Physiology, or MSc in Healthcare Science (STP) – Clinical Cardiac Physiology.
  • Immediate Life Support (ILS).
  • AHCS STP / RCCP registered or working towards STP equivalence.
  • Post‑graduate qualifications such as BHRS, IBHRE, POETTS, ARTP.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of performing and reporting physiologist‑led exercise tests.
  • Proficient in ECG analysis and interpretation.
  • Experience of fitting and analysing ECG and blood‑pressure monitors.
  • High level of knowledge of cardiac pathologies, arrhythmias, acute coronary syndromes and causes of syncope.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Experience, skills and knowledge in complex interventional and structural procedures.
  • Competent in CRM (pacemakers, ICD and CRT) device follow‑up.
  • Experience of performing and reporting physiologist‑led CPET.
  • Experience of performing and reporting heads‑up tilt tests.
  • Experience and evidence of participation in cath‑lab on‑call service.
  • Strong underpinning knowledge of CRM.
  • Competent in CRM (pacemakers, ICD and CRT) device implants.
