Our Emergency Duty Team is at the forefront of providing urgent social care support to individuals and families in crisis. The EDT service provides an out‑of‑hours response to emergencies and other social work matters that cannot safely be left until the next working day. It is a regional partnership between the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Cardiff Council, working collaboratively with partner agencies and other emergency services.

As an EDT Principal Social Worker you will safeguard and uphold the rights of children, young people and adults, working in a strength‑based, preventative way. In a rewarding, diverse but complex environment you will handle cases from child protection to Mental Health Act assessments, making decisions that meet each individual’s needs to achieve optimum outcomes. You will promote equality and inclusion for all citizens, working closely with the Police, Health professionals and other agencies.

What we are looking for from you
Qualifications: A degree in Social Work or an equivalent qualification and registration with Social Care Wales are essential. Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) status is desirable; applicants without AMHP can be supported to train for it.
Experience: Qualified Social Workers with safeguarding experience in adults and children. Ability to assess risks and complex needs of vulnerable individuals and to work autonomously and collaboratively with colleagues and partner agencies.
Expertise: Extensive knowledge of relevant legislation, commitment to ongoing professional development, excellent assessment and analytical skills, and the ability to make sound risk assessments and decisions in crisis situations.
Resilience: Ability to remain calm, effective, and solve problems under pressure. High standards of professional practice, good record keeping, ICT competence and prompt handover to daytime services.
Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, building relationships and influencing others. Effective collaboration with service users, colleagues, senior management and professional bodies.
Additional language skills, Welsh or other community languages, will be considered an advantage.

This is a part‑time position, 18.5 hours per week.
From 1 April 2021 the post attracted a market supplement of £3,000 per annum full‑time equivalent, reviewed annually.
Requires a Disclosure and Barring Service Enhanced check and registration with Social Care Wales.
