The University of Birmingham Guild of Students is a charity and the students’ union for more than 45,000 students. We represent our members to the University and other organisations on the issues that matter to students most. We also exist to help students develop skills outside of study, have fun, meet people and make sure their time at Birmingham is special.
The Guild of Students (the Guild) is looking for a professional to join our Finance Committee as an Independent Member of Appropriate Skills. The Finance Committee reports into our Trustee Board which is ultimately responsible for overseeing the affairs of the Guild. The purpose of the Finance Committee is to ensure appropriate methods of overseeing the organisation’s financial activities and that it meets approved income and expenditure targets via the annual budget process and monthly management accounts.
The Committee meets at least four times per year, normally with a duration of two hours per meeting, and a requirement to have read the papers in advance of each committee meeting.
It is a formative time for the Guild as we begin to look beyond our current 2022-2027 strategy at how we best respond to our members’ current and future needs and expectations, ensuring excellence in all we do. A strong and active Finance Committee is essential to support and guide the organisation’s work.
The Guild welcomes applications from a wide range of backgrounds that are reflective of the full diversity of Birmingham’s community and the West Midlands, and we particularly welcome applications from people of colour as we seek to continually increase diversity within our governance structures.
We would be particularly interested to hear from individuals with a background in senior management in the food & beverage and/or hospitality sectors.
The post of Independent Member of Appropriate Skills is appointed for a period of three years, which can be extended for a second term up to a maximum of six years. This role is not remunerated; however reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
We request your CV and a covering letter (that is no longer than 2 sides of A4) for this role. Please send these to hrteam@guild.bham.ac.uk
