Volunteer Engagement & Warehouse Coordinator

As a Volunteer Engagement & Warehouse Coordinator, you will support volunteers and warehouse operations across FareShare London. Your role will combine on‑site leadership during warehouse activities with back‑office support, recruitment and retention.

Main areas of responsibility

In the warehouse

  • Welcoming new volunteers and delivering health & safety orientations.
  • Supervising and leading volunteers in picking and sorting teams and during corporate volunteer days.
  • Providing information on FareShare’s mission and ensuring volunteers feel valued.
  • Delivering quality service – motivating and appreciating volunteers.
  • Working with the warehouse manager and coordinators to plan and manage group activities, setting up and clearing down warehouse areas.
  • Ensuring volunteers’ safety and comfort, maintaining health and safety standards.
  • Maintaining food safety, adhering to FareShare guidelines and food industry standards.

In the office

  • Represent FareShare professionally at all times.
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Manager to update the online Volunteer Portal.

With people

  • Provide leadership and support to volunteers to fulfil their roles.
  • Work closely with the Volunteer Manager to identify training needs.
  • Partner with the warehouse team to ensure safe and effective operations.
  • Relay volunteer feedback to managers and seek improvements.
  • Support volunteer retention initiatives.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Experience leading teams of people.
  • Good IT skills and willingness to learn FareShare’s food and volunteer management systems.
  • Strong numeracy and literacy; ability to write clearly and identify different foods.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • Experience working with people who may have additional support needs.
  • Knowledge of different foods and their uses in domestic and commercial kitchens.
  • Experience in a regulated food environment.
  • Health and safety experience; ability to complete risk assessments, maintain standards and implement improvements.

Competencies and behaviours

  • Positive, friendly and enthusiastic about tackling food waste and/or food poverty.
  • Excellent communicator, able to motivate people and get the best out of them.
  • Willing to share the FareShare mission.
  • Friendly and approachable team leader, able to build strong working relationships.
  • Confident to lead groups of up to 20 people.
  • Able to perform physical tasks including lifting and loading.
  • Able to work effectively, using initiative in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Able to work well in a team, on own and under pressure.
  • Able to follow FareShare’s policy, procedures and systems.
  • Flexible; occasional group bookings outside specified timings.

Qualifications

  • Willingness to gain a Food Safety and Hygiene Level 2 certificate, provided free of charge by FareShare.
