Job Introduction

Northumberland Skills Service (part of Northumberland County Council) is seeking to appoint a Learning Support Assistant who can make a difference within Northumberland. The role is for individuals with experience in supporting programmes for Post 16 young people and will be on a Term Time only basis.

Role is fixed term until 20/08/2027 and full time, 37 hours per week.

Role of the Job

  • Support a relevant and accessible programme of learning opportunities (courses, workshops, etc.) for learners on an Education Programme for Young People with SEN.
  • Develop support in partnership with the lecturing team to assist and support learners with special educational and general learning needs.
  • Provide learning support for learners in class or in 1:1 situations.
  • Assist learners in integrating as fully as possible into class activities and making progress.
  • Run specific programmes and activities to meet learners’ individual learning and social needs.
  • Implement targets on learners’ Individual Education Health Care Plans (EHCP) in liaison with lecturers.
  • Seek advice from lecturers and outside agencies as required, and adapt resources accordingly.
  • Maintain an inclusive learning environment across the whole setting.
  • Provide positive reinforcement, praise, and rewards to learners, and facilitate inclusion in small group activities.

Applicants for the Position Need to Have

  • Experience working with children with special educational needs in a Post 16 setting.
  • GCSE, ‘O’ Level, or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English.
  • Level 2 or equivalent qualification as recognised by the National Occupational Standards for Supporting Teaching and Learning (NOS‑STL).
  • Knowledge and understanding of the social, cultural, and physical needs of pupils.
  • Interest in how young people learn and behave.
  • Ability to act as an appropriate role model of behaviour both in the classroom and outside.
  • Passionate caring for young people, especially those who find learning and behaviour management difficult.
  • Training in aspects of SEN, e.g. ELSA, dyslexia.
  • Willingness to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure Check.
