Advanced Biomedical Support Worker Band 3 Clinical Blood Sciences

Monday to Sunday | Rotating shift pattern including some 12-hour night shifts. | To be an efficient and flexible member of the SWL Pathology team providing a consistently high-quality and professional service to all users of the service.

Introduction

SWL Pathology is seeking an Advanced Biomedical Support Worker Band 3 to support the Clinical Blood Sciences team. This role operates on a rotating shift pattern and applicants must be available to work Monday to Sunday. Flexibility is essential, as the role includes some 12-hour night shifts.

Key Duties:

  • Assist and support registered Biomedical Scientists in providing a professional laboratory service.
  • Contribute to the efficient and effective running of the department and sections as appropriate.
  • Provide basic clinical technical services to patients that may include research and audit samples.
  • Work in a designated area of the department under the supervision of a section leader whilst organising own work tasks and activities.
  • Weigh and measure volumes and make up solutions accurately.
  • Process basic quality assurance on analysers and report findings to a more senior member of staff.
  • Understand and perform work in accordance with standard operational policies using basic theoretical knowledge.
  • Ensure documentation is maintained to the SWL Pathology standard, including electronic records.
  • Solve problems within the work area and refer unresolved problems to a more senior member of staff.
  • Perform assigned laboratory tests under supervision.
  • Prepare specimens for diagnostic testing.
  • Prioritise urgent work.
  • Contribute towards a culture of quality within the department and comply with and promote quality initiatives consistent with maintaining laboratory accreditation.

Requirements:

  • GCSE/O Levels in Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry, or equivalent.
  • Proven experience of working in a diagnostic pathology department.
  • Knowledge across a range of laboratory procedures.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate information accurately.
  • Ability to follow written methodologies or protocols.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Organised and methodical approach to work.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Preparedness to work with biological materials.
  • Awareness of health and safety issues.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Basic medical terminology knowledge.
