We are looking for self-motivated, flexible and versatile individuals to join our Pathology Reception team. The role is an administration‑based position, not a laboratory post, and will involve working under pressure in challenging conditions.

Job Type: Part‑time; rotating shifts between 08:00 and 20:00, including weekdays, weekends and bank holidays.Location: Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath (Sussex).Salary: £25,272 pro rata (annual).

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, sort and process a substantial quantity of clinical samples, identifying and resolving problems such as leaking samples, labelling errors or missing information.
  • Perform accurate data entry on computers for patient information and investigations requested by clinical staff and GPs; maintain accuracy and legible handwriting.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) at all times, prioritising work according to established guidelines.
  • Determine sample suitability for testing and take appropriate action; adhere to system protocols for phoning results.
  • Answer calls on the Pathology enquiry line on a rota basis, providing results, information and advice within competency.
  • Handle requests for supplementary tests, locate appropriate samples, order tests, and communicate any issues to requesters.
  • Book leave, report personal absence, and comply with trust policies for grievance, discipline and capability.
  • Act as the first point of contact for all pathology enquiries, maintain confidentiality, and communicate with outside sources when required.
  • Collaborate with other staff to optimise resource utilisation, attend meetings as directed, and cooperate with staff within the Pathology department.
  • Participate in training and development programmes, including competency training for junior staff, and complete all mandatory and statutory training courses.
  • Maintain and safeguard laboratory information systems, report non‑functional hardware, and use quality management procedures for data integrity.
  • Assist with data collection for audits and maintain awareness of all types of documentation within the laboratory organisation.
  • Work within health and safety policies, recognise hazards, apply precautionary measures and report defects.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as delegated by the manager or supervisor.

Experience and Skills

  • Good standard of education including English and Mathematics.
  • Computer literate with strong IT and keyboard skills; excellent typing accuracy.
  • Previous experience in the NHS, preferably with patho‑logy services.
  • Strong organisational and time‑management abilities; accurate and detail‑oriented.
  • Excellent communication skills, telephone manner and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of data protection and patient confidentiality requirements.
  • Ability to adhere to departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.
