Job Overview

We are recruiting a Building Maintenance Technician to support ambulance service operations. The role involves maintaining and repairing station facilities, ensuring all building systems remain safe, functional and compliant. The post holder will carry out a wide range of planned and reactive maintenance tasks across SECAmb estates within a defined geographical area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide practical day‑to‑day maintenance support across SECAmb sites, ensuring safety, functionality, compliance and good appearance.
  • Carried out across multiple ambulance stations, offices and workshops, with travel across the Southeast region; work may include unsociable hours and on‑call duties for 24/7 operations.
  • Carry out minor repairs and maintenance tasks within competence, including basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, decoration, fabric repairs, cleaning and general upkeep as directed by the Estates line manager.
  • Conduct routine inspections, identify defects, wear and tear and potential hazards, taking appropriate action or escalating where necessary.
  • Assist with planned inspections, compliance checks and minor improvement works.
  • Support contractors on site, monitor works for safety and compliance, and complete post‑work checks.
  • Assist with installation, assembly and movement of equipment and furniture.
  • Maintain accurate records of work, materials and issues using Trust systems.
  • Ensure tools, equipment, vans and uniforms are safe, maintained, stored and kept tidy.
  • Support grounds maintenance where required, including minor external repairs and seasonal tasks.
  • Contribute to emergency response and business continuity arrangements by assisting with estates‑related incidents or urgent site issues.
  • Promote a professional, customer‑focused approach and represent the Estates and Facilities team positively.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying recurring maintenance issues and suggesting cost‑effective solutions.

Qualifications, Training and Experience

  • Basic qualification in a building or maintenance‑related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • NVQ Level 2/3 (or equivalent) in Maintenance / Building Services.
  • Formal training in electrical, plumbing or carpentry.
  • Health & Safety awareness training and manual handling training.
  • Driving licence suitable for a van.
  • Experience carrying out general maintenance or repair work, working in a customer‑facing or service delivery role and in a multi‑site environment.
  • Experience working within healthcare or the public sector and with contractors.

Knowledge

  • Basic building maintenance and repair techniques.
  • Health & safety requirements in the workplace.
  • Knowledge of NHS estate compliance standards and statutory compliance (Legionella, fire safety, electrical safety).

Skills

  • Ability to carry out a range of basic maintenance tasks.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Prioritise workload and respond to urgent issues.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic IT skills for recording work and reporting.
  • Fault diagnosis and problem‑solving skills.
  • Interpret basic technical instructions or drawings.
