Job Overview

This position is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. Applicants must already hold the right to work in the UK for the full duration of the contract. The role will be for 22.5 hours per week with ideal hours 10:00–14:30 five days per week, and is not a term‑time only role; the start date is in September.

We have a unique, caring and inclusive team who are delighted to be responsible for the care of children and young people from five days to 18 years old across Hampshire.

Our department has a 4‑bedded high‑dependency unit and 22 inpatient beds. We have close links with our paediatric assessment unit, neonatal unit, children’s outpatient department, paediatric A&E, children’s community nursing teams and our regional children’s hospital in Southampton.

We promote strong interdepartmental and cross‑site working relationships with both Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospital.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Support the delivery of person‑centred care under the supervision of registered and non‑registered nursing staff.
  • Assist patients with personal care (bathing, dressing, toileting, meals).
  • Help with non‑clinical duties in a ward or department.
  • Ensure patient safety, dignity and wellbeing at all times.
  • Manage ward stock.
  • Clean equipment on the F1 paediatric ward and paediatric assessment unit.

Core Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer care skills to ensure patients come first.
  • Act as an advocate for patients within the department/ward/unit.
  • Follow FHFT guidelines, policies, and procedures to maintain safe working practices for patients and colleagues.
  • Ensure that patients receive high‑quality communication and a good experience, taking into account their customs, religious beliefs or principles.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential criteria:

  • Experience working in a healthcare, retail, warehouse or customer service environment.
  • Experience of stock control, replenishment or inventory management.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience conducting stock audits.
  • Previous NHS or healthcare experience.
  • Experience cleaning clinical or healthcare environments.

Qualifications

Essential criteria:

  • Evidence of general education, e.g. GCSEs or equivalent functional skills Level 2 Numeracy and Literacy.
  • Willingness to work towards and complete the Healthcare Support Worker Level 2 apprenticeship.

Desirable criteria:

  • Knowledge of personal care and related procedures.
  • Vocational qualification at Level 2 or equivalent relevant experience.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria:

  • Awareness of infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Good standard of literacy and numeracy (GCSEs or equivalent may be required).
  • Experience following procedures and maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Knowledge of how to respect individuality and diversity of patients, their carers and colleagues.
  • Clear and accurate written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Ability to listen effectively and demonstrate an empathetic, sensitive approach, and communicate compassionately to colleagues, staff and patients.
  • Understanding of the requirements of patient confidentiality.

Desirable criteria:

  • Knowledge of NHS supply chain processes.
  • Infection control training.
