Fuel Point Attendant (Development Role)

We’re recruiting for a Fuel Point Attendant (FPA) at our Eastleigh Depot – a development role with a structured pathway leading to full qualification as a Service Assistant.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a professional Light Maintenance team, gain valuable rail skills, and progress through a clear, supported training programme.

About The Role

As a Fuel Point Attendant, you will carry out essential overnight servicing activities to ensure trains are safe, replenished, and ready for service.

Through a detailed multi‑stage training programme, you will develop the competency needed to progress into the Service Assistant role, achieving the higher salary upon completion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fuelling traction units
  • Filling toilet water tanks and emptying effluent tanks
  • Filling wholesome water tanks
  • Replenishing coolants, oils, sanding systems and screenwash
  • Supporting efficient movement and throughput of vehicles within the depot
  • Completing all required documentation accurately
  • Carrying out maintenance tasks to set instructions
  • Operating depot plant and equipment once trained
  • Assisting Maintenance and Train Presentation teams when required
  • Maintaining tools, equipment and ensuring excellent housekeeping standards
  • Participating in safety briefings, safety tours and compliance activities
  • Providing cover for Operations Controller duties as training progresses

Essential

  • Good standard of education
  • IT literate
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Problem‑solving ability
  • Understanding of health, safety and environmental standards

Desirable

  • NVQ Level 2 in Engineering or BTEC / City & Guilds equivalent
  • Experience within a depot, engineering, or rail environment
  • Knowledge of mechanical or engineering principles

Training & Progression

You will complete a structured, multi‑stage development programme, covering:

  • Equality & Diversity, Fire Safety, Manual Handling, COSHH, Working at Heights, Waste Management
  • Depot Safety, Personal Track Safety (PTS), Spill Training
  • Technical modules (torque tightening, axle bearings, unit‑specific competencies)
  • Development hours in Driver Operations and Shunting
  • First aid, defibrillator usage, ergonomics and PPE awareness

Once all required competencies and assessments are successfully completed, you will progress to Service Assistant with a salary of £25,927.

Additional Information

  • Safety Critical role (Drug & Alcohol testing applies)
  • PTS required (training provided)
  • Night shift pattern: 20:00–06:30, 4 on / 4 off
