Maintenance Shift Technician

We are seeking a team member to work as part of an in‑house maintenance shift team to provide a total planned and reactive maintenance service. The holder will be responsible for Trust‑wide service in accordance with the duties and responsibilities listed below.
Shift pattern: 2 on / 3 off / 2 on (rotating days and nights), 37.5 hrs over a 4‑week period.
Main Duties
- Perform unsupervised maintenance on all engineering plant and equipment, including testing and fault‑finding across the hospital.
- Act as the Competent & Appointed Person for the Trust in safe operation and maintenance of boiler and other plant and systems.
- Work independently to undertake maintenance and repairs as directed, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards.
- Maintain communication devices (pager, two‑way radio, mobile phone) for immediate response to emergency situations.
- Provide first‑line response to maintain clinical services, aiming for a “first‑time fix” or temporary measures to keep clinical capacity.
- Respond to urgent situations such as lift entrapment, fire alarm calls, ballast failures and blocked drains.
- Issue permits to work for directly employed staff and contractors, and supervise contractors outside normal working hours.
- Maintain accurate records of all major repairs, logbooks and Works Orders.
- Carry out building surveys, inspections, fire alarm and security system testing.
- Advise on material, equipment and systems; support company projects and maintain service records.
- Supervise and train maintenance assistants, apprentices and contractors.
Key Activities
- Plan, prioritise and schedule own workload with minimal supervision.
- Diagnose and repair faults in engineering, electrical and plumbing installations.
- Communicate technical issues and safety requirements to other staff, patients and contractors.
- Maintain building and site service records and highlight Health & Safety issues.
- Participate in shift rota and provide cover for other technicians during absences.
Qualifications & Skills
- City & Guilds Level 3 or NVQ Level 3 in Electrical and/or Mechanical Services.
- Experience in a multi‑skilled maintenance position with a core skill in Electrical or Mechanical Services.
- Experience as a Competent Person (e.g., Low Voltage CP, Medical Gases CP, HVAC CP).
- Experience in a shift technician role within a healthcare environment.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Strong problem‑solving, customer‑service and communication skills.
- Physically fit to lift and carry heavy items (up to 15 kg and more).
- Willingness to respond to emergency tasks such as fire alarms, heating failures and blocked drains.

- Comply with relevant regulations and undertake mandatory training.
- Always wear the correct PPE.
