Maintenance Technician
Recruitment for a Maintenance Technician to join the Estates department on a full‑time, permanent basis at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job
- Serve a 4‑year recognised and registered craft apprenticeship and hold an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering with relevant hospital maintenance experience.
- Carry out maintenance duties efficiently to support a customer focused estate maintenance service.
- Perform routine duties delegated by the maintenance team leader with minimum supervision and maintain a flexible and positive approach to change.
- Work competently on a wide range of Building Services systems, servicing, testing, diagnosing and repairing mechanical/electrical plant and equipment.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, manuals and installation plans.
- Handle new situations as they arise and pass relevant knowledge to the team.
Job responsibilities
Management responsibilities
- Consult with trust management, nursing personnel, support staff, statutory bodies and contractors to advise on action and implement recommendations where within capabilities.
- Ensure compliance with all trust procedures, policies, Health & Safety and Risk management.
- Carry out risk assessments for own work.
- Participate in the on‑call system, acting as first point of contact for out of hours emergencies and escalating cases to senior managers as necessary.
Leadership responsibilities
- Lead and communicate specialist knowledge to estates staff.
- Prioritise workload and execute tasks accordingly.
- Install, repair, service and calibrate a wide range of complex, mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment, building services and plant in accordance with Health Technical Memoranda, water bylaws, British Standards, code of practice and legislation.
- Participate in the planning and operation of preventive maintenance schemes.
- Use hand and power tools, test equipment and electronic instruments to diagnose faults in site and workshop.
- Perform manual handling of heavy objects (up to 25 kg) after suitable training.
- Clean, decontaminate and repair patient‑related and specialised equipment.
Communication responsibilities
- Liaise with patients, nursing staff, management, contractors and support staff to determine problem extent and priorities.
- Document results of equipment testing in appropriate forms and report to site management.
- Carry radio or similar communication device when required.
Training responsibilities
- Undertake specialist mandatory equipment training as required by trust policies and legislation.
- Update knowledge of new techniques or equipment.
- Cascade training to other estates staff as necessary.
General responsibilities
- Participate in the technician on‑call system for all trust properties, travelling to required sites.
- Cover for periods when shift technicians are absent.
Person specification
Qualifications
- Mechanical / Electrical apprenticeship.
- H.N.C. or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
Knowledge & Experience
- Relevant experience in a maintenance / building services environment.
- Logical fault‑finding methodology.
Skills

- Computer literate.
- Good telephone manner.
- Physically fit, able to climb vertical ladders.
- Effective communication with staff at all levels.
