Customer Service Underwriter – Join NFU Mutual in Bristol and start a rewarding career in insurance underwriting. No prior insurance experience is required; we will provide comprehensive training and support.
Start date: 14th September 2026Location: BristolSalary: £25,000 per annum + up to 10% annual bonus
Hybrid working model: After a 6‑month probationary period, you can work up to 80% of your week from home while still staying connected in the office.
Working hours: A standard 35‑hour rotating shift pattern (8:00am–6:00pm, Monday to Friday) with an average of one Saturday every four weeks 9:00am–12:30pm. During initial training, the routine is Monday–Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm. After probation, you may increase to 40 hours per week if desired.
Responsibilities
- Conduct telephone-based underwriting, reviewing customer information and deciding appropriate coverage.
- Engage with NFU Mutual agencies, answering queries and providing risk assessment support.
- Participate in a structured training program comprising classroom sessions, shadowing, and ongoing managerial support.
- Contribute to our fast‑paced contact centre environment, maintaining high service quality.
- Work towards formal insurance qualifications as part of career development.
Qualifications and Skills
- Customer focus – experience in a phone‑based customer service role, delivering excellent service under pressure.
- Communication and teamwork – ability to build rapport, explain clearly and collaborate effectively.
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving – interpret information, reason logically and make fair decisions.
- Learning mindset – curious, open to feedback and eager to grow skills.
- Resilience and time management – remain calm under pressure, manage competing priorities.
- Insurance experience is desirable but not required; all training will be provided.
