About the Role

Due to the recent retirement of our current caretaker, we are looking for a reliable and responsible individual with physical stamina, DIY experience, general maintenance skills, and record‑keeping ability to support our busy, nurturing school environment. The successful candidate will be resilient, a good team player, and committed to providing the best for children and the local community.

We have a committed team of teaching and non‑teaching staff and are keen to recruit someone who wants to give us the best place to be each day. The mental health and well‑being of children, staff and parents is a constant driving force at Cedars.

This role will be subject to a successful 6‑month probationary period.

BROAD DESCRIPTION

  • Maintain a clean, attractive, safe, secure, and welcoming site through regular monitoring of cleaning routines and scheduled and dynamic maintenance of buildings, grounds, fixtures, and fittings.
  • Supervise a small number of cleaning staff, checking work and providing instruction.
  • Handle limited budgetary responsibilities, including ordering supplies within a set budget.
  • Ensure the security of buildings and the school site.

Typical Tasks

Security

  • Carry out security procedures for the school buildings and grounds.
  • Manage routine and non‑routine opening and closing and secure premises.
  • Prevent trespass and unauthorized parking.
  • Act as a nominated keyholder and respond to alarm, police, or other emergencies outside normal hours.

Cleaning

  • Perform limited cleaning outside school holidays.
  • Maintain premises and furnishings to school/authorities’ standards and perform regular checks.
  • Execute holiday‑specific cleaning/maintenance tasks and keep log sheets.
  • Audit and order cleaning materials and equipment as required.

Maintenance

  • Respond promptly to the school’s Maintenance Reporting System prioritising Health and Safety tasks.
  • Maintain basic tools and equipment; report and resolve repairs, contacting external services when needed.
  • Direct contractors and inspect their work to ensure compliance with Health and Safety and school expectations.
  • Operate the heating plant to maintain adequate hot‑water supply and temperature.
  • Carry out frost precaution, fire, flood, and other emergency procedures.
  • Ensure playing areas, paths, drains, and gullies are free from litter and blockages.
  • Store caretaking and cleaning equipment safely and organize access to holiday maintenance projects.

Stock

  • Receive and store deliveries; check orders and ensure completeness.

Lettings

  • Prepare facilities for after‑school activities and out‑of‑hours use, following lettings procedures.

Health & Safety

  • Act as a qualified First Aider and oversee the well‑being of cleaning staff.
  • Handle manual handling, risk assessments, and Health and Safety termly checks.
  • Record and maintain COSHH documentation.

Training

  • Assist senior staff with risk assessments and Health and Safety checks.
  • Respond to alarm alerts and ensure site safety before leaving premises.
  • Maintain knowledge of HSAW and COSHH guidelines.

Other Skills

  • Undertake relevant CPD and be flexible to daily school needs, including weather or emergencies.
  • Manage unforeseen circumstances, resolve hazards or accidents with initiative and creativity.

Qualifications / Training and Likely Abilities

  • Good literacy and numeracy skills for administrative systems and stock control.
  • Strong communication skills to explain concerns, listen and respond clearly.
  • Ability to carry out procedures, follow instructions, and operate cleaning equipment.
  • Understand and navigate the school layout and site.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and support cleaning staff.
  • Creative problem‑solving and investigative skills.
