About the Role

The Department of Classics and Ancient History seeks to appoint a Teaching Fellow for a fixed-term period of three years from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2029, at 1.0FTE in year one and then 0.8FTE in years two and three.

The purpose of this post is to provide teaching in Beginners and Intermediate intensive accelerated Latin language, convening and lecturing the year one undergraduate ‘Encounters with Latin Texts’ module (taught in translation), undergraduate dissertation supervision, and pastoral and administrative cover. In year one, it also requires module convening and some lecturing for the year one undergraduate module ‘Ancient Thought: Philosophy, Politics, Science’.

The role requires a research specialism in Greek and/or Latin language and literature, and the ability to teach and support student learning in the areas identified.

About You

You will teach Latin language levels 1 and 2 (beginners’ to intermediate accelerated) within the department’s structure. You will teach the year one undergraduate ‘Encounters with Latin Texts’ module (in translation) and supervise some final-year dissertations in relevant areas. In year one, you will also convene and offer some lectures for the year one undergraduate module ‘Ancient Thought: Philosophy, Politics, Science’. You will undertake administrative duties within the Department as required, and pastoral duties including personal tutoring. You will mark exams and assessed work as required, and will need experience in classroom teaching, marking, supervising and offering constructive feedback.
