About the Role

Scientific Reports is a primary research journal from the publishers of Nature. The Deputy Editor leads a team of Associate and Senior Editors, supports the Chief Editor in overseeing editorial workflows, ensures rapid publication, maintains sound peer‑review practices, and delivers high service levels to staff, authors, and Editorial Board Members.

Responsibilities

  • Train and line‑manage Associate/Senior Editors.
  • Oversee daily workflow to provide rapid, constructive peer‑review and publication decisions, acting as handling editor on manuscripts as required.
  • Respond to authors, reviewers, Editorial Board Members, and readers in a timely fashion.
  • Collaborate with the publishing team to allocate manuscripts to Editorial Board Members.
  • Liaise with Editorial Board Members to follow up on peer review and final decisions, ensuring decision policies are adhered to.
  • Resolve pre‑ and post‑publication issues raised by staff, Editorial Board Members and readers (authorship, scope, ethics, consent, misconduct).
  • Contribute to policy development and implement editorial policy as required.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with Editorial Board Members, arrange in‑person and board meetings, and support engagement initiatives.
  • Recruit and train new Editorial Board Members where required.
  • Represent Scientific Reports at international and national conferences and institutional visits.
  • Engage with editorial colleagues on other journals, drive collaboration on projects, and sign‑off on social media and marketing content.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Ph.D. level research experience or equivalent in life or health sciences.
  • Previous experience coordinating peer review and making independent manuscript decisions within a world‑class STM publishing company.
  • Experience organising and leading outreach events, interacting with senior academic stakeholders, and promoting a journal or portfolio of journals.
  • In‑depth knowledge of and experience handling editorial ethics and misconduct issues.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).
  • Strong workload management, organisational, and independent working skills.
  • Adaptable, flexible, self‑motivated, resourceful and achievement‑oriented.
  • Thorough knowledge of the scientific community and its needs.
  • Interest in science in general and willingness to travel.
