Teacher of Plumbing and Heating (2025/AG070)

Peterlee – Technical Skills Academy , SR8 2HU

Contract Type: Full Time

East Durham College is seeking an experienced Plumbing & Heating professional to join our growing Technical Skills Academy as a Lecturer.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone working in industry who is ready to take the next step in their career — sharing their knowledge, shaping future tradespeople, and making a real difference.

You don’t need to be a qualified teacher to apply. If you have strong industry experience and a passion for developing others, we will support you in gaining a teaching qualification while you work.

You’ll deliver high-quality teaching across Levels 1–3, helping learners develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviours they need to progress into employment or further study.

What you’ll be doing

  • Deliver engaging practical and theory sessions aligned with industry and awarding body standards
  • Plan and prepare high-quality learning materials, including digital resources
  • Assess learner work, provide constructive feedback, and maintain accurate records
  • Support curriculum development and contribute to quality improvement activities
  • Provide academic and pastoral support, including careers and progression guidance
  • Build relationships with employers and support work experience opportunities
  • Take part in team meetings, standardisation activities, and college events
  • Keep your industry knowledge up to date and engage in continuous professional development
  • Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity, and a positive learning environment

What we’re looking for

  • A Level 3 qualification in Plumbing & Heating (or a related discipline)
  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent)
  • Industry experience is essential — teaching experience is not
  • A teaching qualification (Cert Ed/PGCE/DTLLS) is desirable, but not required — full support will be provided to achieve this
  • A genuine interest in supporting and developing the next generation of tradespeople
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage workload effectively
  • A professional, reliable, and team-focused approach
  • An understanding of safeguarding and inclusive practice (training can be provided)
  • A full UK driving licence (or access to transport), where applicable
  • Assessor or Internal Verifier awards are advantageous but not essential
  • Support to gain a teaching qualification if you’re new to education
  • Opportunity to transition from industry into a rewarding teaching career
  • Be part of a supportive and forward-thinking team
  • Help shape the future of the plumbing and heating industry

If you’re an experienced professional ready to step away from the tools and into the classroom — or to combine both — we’d love to hear from you.

What we offer:

  • 45 days annual leave + Bank Holidays.
  • Teacher Pension Scheme with up to 28.68% employer contributions.
  • Access to a Cash Healthcare Plan.
  • Heavily discounted Gym Membership.
  • Enhanced Maternity/ Paternity and Adoption leave.
  • 3 days paid emergency leave per year.
  • Various Paid and unpaid leave for other needs.
  • Funded Continuous Professional Development (CPD) where appropriate.
  • Onsite restaurant, Canteen and Hair and Beauty Salon.
  • Free onsite parking.
  • On site Nursery facilities (up to 5 yoa).
  • Cycle to work scheme and much more.
  • Access to free Beamish Tickets.
