WorkwithSchools are working with a local primary school, north-west of York, to recruit a General Teaching Assistant (GTA), with Higher Level Teaching Assistant hours (HLTA) and some Midday Supervisory Assistant cover. This role is to start ASAP, then permanent from September 2026. The role will involve working 31.25 hours per week, from 08:45 – 15:30 as a GTA (optional HLTA hours available) and from 12:00 to 13:00 as a Midday Supervisory Assistant.

Responsibilities

The role includes supporting teaching and learning as a General Teaching Assistant, working with teachers and other school employees to support pupils in small groups or individually under the direction of teaching staff. Support is needed for pre‑planned learning and SEMH activities directed by the teacher. HLTA hours cover teacher PPA time or short‑term absence, communicating pupil work as planned by the classroom teacher and managing pupil behaviour. Activities involve planning, preparing and delivering learning lessons, monitoring pupils, assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ achievement, progress and development under the direction of the class/subject teacher. For Midday Supervisory Assistant cover, supervision of playground area, playing fields, cloakrooms and classrooms during lunch break is required to ensure safety of children and young people.

Qualifications

  • Level 2 numeracy & literacy qualification or equivalent
  • HLTA status or QTS. It is essential that Higher Level Teaching Assistants are assessed against and meet the HLTA standards, or have Qualified Teacher Status to enable them to deliver teaching and learning activities to a whole class.
  • Significant experience of working with children in an educational setting
  • A good understanding of child/young people’s development and learning processes
  • Understanding of individual children and young peoples’ needs
  • An understanding that children/Young people have differing needs and knowledge of inclusive practice
