Mobile Technical Operative (Multiskilled)

EQUANS is looking for a Mobile Technical Operative (Multiskilled) covering the Newcastle Combined Courts for our HMCTS contract. This is a permanent full-time role working 40 hours per week with a competitive salary and benefits package.

General Overview

The primary purpose of the role is to carry out planned and reactive maintenance on a wide variety of Mechanical and Electrical Buildings Services Engineering plant, ensuring all activities are completed safely and in accordance with contracted output specifications and EQUANS processes and procedures. Duties include Legionella control, monitoring activities and basic plumbing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure routine PPM is carried out to all mechanical and electrical plant in accordance with site task schedules and CAFM.
  • Complete reactive tasks throughout the sites and proactively highlight areas for improvement.
  • Remedy plant faults and defects swiftly to maintain plant in serviceable order.
  • Provide suitable spares and parts lists with estimated timescales for remedial works.
  • Complete all relevant paperwork/CAFM for PPM, reactive and breakdown works and forward to the contract administrator.
  • Prepare and use Method Statements and Risk Assessments for all tasks to ensure safe working practices.
  • Develop good working relationships with EQUANS staff, subcontractors and client representatives.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy working environment and wear uniform and PPE at all times.
  • Present a professional image of EQUANS to clients.
  • Keep up‑to‑date plant logs and ensure plant rooms are clean and tidy.
  • Arrange and provide holiday and sickness cover on short notice and be flexible in working patterns.
  • Perform lone working when required, subject to satisfactory training.
  • Action assigned tasks and ensure completion.
  • Maintain awareness and compliance with contractual KPI’s/SLA’s.
  • Ensure CAFM system, e.g. Maximo, is kept up to date and tickets are closed out accurately.
  • Operate a Permit to Work System in accordance with EQUANS Technical and SHEQ processes and client requirements.
  • Carry out any other task directed by the account management team.

Client, Helpdesk and Compliance

  • Respond promptly to verbal and written requests.
  • Coordinate quotations with the contract manager and produce information for quotations.
  • Support the Helpdesk for reporting or updating planned and reactive maintenance.
  • Provide out‑of‑hours call‑out support.
  • Gain technical appointments as required (e.g. LVCP/LVAP/Mechanical/Pressure CP).
  • Produce Condition/Dilapidation Reports as required.
  • Inform supervisor immediately of dangerous circumstances.
  • Comply with SHEQ manager requests and company health and safety policy.
  • Ensure PPE is safe to use and report accidents and near misses promptly.
  • Maintain calibration of test equipment and follow Method Statements & Risk Assessments.

Impact and Complexity

  • Carry out Mechanical Engineering tasks and maintain company quality standards.
  • Comply with specifications, material and workmanship schedules.
  • Maintain and care for company tools and van in accordance with vehicle policy.
  • Coordinate materials and complete relevant site documentation.
  • Manage Planned and Reactive tasks and subcontractors in accordance with H&S legislation.
  • Prepare company reports, worksheets and support service level agreements and procedures.
  • Work unsupervised when needed and complete statutory paperwork.
  • Assist other engineers and operatives throughout the region.
  • Participate in call‑out rota (Mon‑Fri).

Qualifications or Required Experience

  • Circa 5 years relevant experience as a Mechanical Engineer within an FM environment.
  • City and Guilds – Mechanical Engineering Services NVQ Level 2 or higher.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels.
  • Proactive in achieving high operational standards.
  • Good IT and report‑writing skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver services within time constraints.
  • High initiative and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Full understanding of customer needs and expectations.
  • Ability to comprehend and act upon verbal and written instructions.
  • Enthusiastic, proactive, diligent and alert with willingness to train.
  • Integrity, honesty and punctuality.
  • Valid full and clean UK driving licence.
