Overview

St Bede’s Catholic Primary School wishes to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Caretaker. The successful candidate will work in a team to maintain our school site and provide a welcoming and safe environment for the whole school community.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the maintenance and security of the school and grounds, including routine testing, maintenance, ordering supplies, and handyperson activities.
  • Open and secure the school premises as appropriate.
  • Ensure the school is well presented and maintained to a high standard, promoting health and safety in all activities.
  • Maintain building and site security during and after school hours and take remedial action when required.
  • Respond to security alarms or other call‑outs in accordance with agreed procedures.
  • Carry out a range of handyperson duties directed by the Head Teacher, such as remedial painting and decorating, repairs to fittings, taps, cisterns, and installation of shelves or notice boards.
  • Monitor consumables and stock, informing of shortages through agreed processes.
  • Perform general porterage duties, including moving furniture, deliveries and equipment within the school.
  • Conduct regular health and safety checks of buildings, grounds, fixtures, and fittings, including compliance with fire safety regulations.
  • Maintain tidiness and safety of the outside areas, clearing snow, treating main entrances, paths, car park and yard areas with salt or grit as appropriate.
  • Coordinate and assist with deliveries, unloading and moving items to designated areas.
  • Work with the Trust Estates Manager and Trust Central Teams to ensure statutory compliance and health and safety requirements are met.
  • Carry out minor repairs as required.

Qualifications

  • Hands‑on, well organised.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Practical knowledge of basic maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to undertake moving and handling of physical objects.
  • Flexible approach and strong teamwork ability.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Ability to use own initiative.
