This full‑time, long‑term role involves providing 1:1 support for a Key Stage 1 pupil with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who has very limited verbal communication. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the child’s learning, communication, social development, and emotional well‑being throughout the school day. Due to the pupil’s communication needs, experience and confidence using Makaton and/or PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a KS1 pupil with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
- Use Makaton and/or PECS to support communication and engagement.
- Assist the pupil in accessing the curriculum and participating in classroom activities.
- Support emotional regulation and promote positive behaviour strategies.
- Build a trusting and supportive relationship to encourage confidence and independence.
- Manage challenging situations calmly, effectively, and consistently.
Ideal Candidate
- Previous experience supporting children with SEND, ASD, autism, speech and communication needs, or additional learning needs.
- Knowledge and practical experience of Makaton and/or PECS.
- Experience working within a primary school, SEND setting, alternative provision, or similar environment.
- Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
- Patience, empathy, and resilience when supporting children with complex needs.
- The ability to remain calm and positive during challenging situations.
- Relevant Teaching Assistant, SEND, Childcare, Education, or Autism qualifications (desirable but not essential).
