GSL Education are currently searching for an experienced Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist post‑16 educational setting in York. This role is based in a supportive learning environment that provides tailored education for students with high needs and SEND, ensuring they are fully included and able to progress in their studies and personal development.
As a Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant, you will provide targeted support to learners who may present with challenging behaviour, social and emotional difficulties, or additional learning needs. You will play a key role in promoting positive behaviour strategies, emotional regulation, and engagement in learning, helping students to access a meaningful and inclusive educational experience.
Main Responsibilities as a Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant:
- Provide 1:1 and small group behaviour support to students with high needs and SEND.
- Support learners who may present with challenging behaviour, SEMH needs, or emotional regulation difficulties.
- Implement positive behaviour management strategies and de‑escalation techniques where required.
- Assist students in developing coping strategies, resilience, and independence in learning.
- Support access to learning by adapting approaches to individual needs under guidance from teaching staff.
- Work with students with a range of needs including Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, SEMH, Speech, Language and Communication Needs, Dyspraxia, and Moderate to Severe Learning Difficulties.
- Encourage positive engagement, attendance, and participation in educational activities.
- Work collaboratively with tutors, support staff, and external professionals to support student progress.
- Monitor and record behaviour, engagement, and progress where required.
- Promote a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment at all times.
Behaviour Support Teaching Assistant Minimum Requirements:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEND, SEMH, or challenging behaviour is essential.
- Strong understanding of behaviour management and de‑escalation strategies.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and consistent in challenging situations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A proactive and supportive approach to encouraging positive behaviour and engagement.
- Ability to build trusting relationships with vulnerable learners.
- Strong teamwork skills and the ability to follow guidance from teaching and support staff.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one).
