Job overview

Position: Catering Assistant (Bank) – Grade 2, NHS AfC, Band 2. Hours: bank shifts with flexible arrival between 6 am and 8 pm, 7 days a week. Location: Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, Blackburn. Salary: £25,272 per annum, pro‑rated for part‑time work. Closing: 7 July 2026.

Key responsibilities

  • Assist with patient meal service, rotating across service areas to meet all patient feeding requirements.
  • Clean premises and equipment to the standards set by cleaning schedules and hygiene policies.
  • Operate and maintain automatic industrial dishwashers.
  • Prepare and cook simple food items (salads, sandwiches, breakfasts), buffets for functions, and simple diet dishes following standardised recipes.
  • Plate and serve meals and beverages to patients and staff, including temperature probing and recording according to policy.
  • Issue food items to wards, ensuring correct storage, rotation, and maintenance of min/max stock levels.
  • Maintain ward beverage trolleys, fridges, and vending machines.
  • Handle cash, check floats and secure takings in accordance with Trust financial instructions.
  • Complete required documentation and record keeping.
  • Handle heavy items safely; lift, carry, bend, twist, push, and pull as necessary.
  • Collect patient dietary information and menus using paper and electronic methods.
  • Complete any training and apply skills across all aspects of the role.

Person specification

Qualifications / experience

  • GCSE English and Maths, grade C/4 or above, or equivalent.
  • Willingness to obtain Foundation Food Hygiene Qualification or equivalent.
  • Willingness to complete NVQ Level 2 in Hospitality/Customer Care or equivalent.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team without direct supervision.
  • Experience working in a large team and taking initiative when required.
  • Experience in food environment cleaning or similar.
  • Previous hospital or hospitality experience.
  • Experience using industrial catering equipment.

  • Ability to keep information confidential.
