The Role

Gardeners are dynamic public open space management professionals who draw upon a horticultural knowledge base and skill set to help ensure that our public green spaces remain open, accessible, safe, and beautiful. Gardeners play a vital role in overseeing the day‑to‑day care of our gardens, parks and open spaces, conserving them for future generations, and ensuring that they remain places of pride for the City Corporation and the communities that surround and use them.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee day‑to‑day care of gardens, parks and open spaces.
  • Ensure green spaces remain open, accessible, safe and beautiful.
  • Conserve open spaces for future generations.
  • Maintain pride for the City Corporation and surrounding communities.

Ideal Candidate

  • Full clean driving licence.
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety within a work environment.
  • Relevant certification and experience to operate machinery and tools.
  • Demonstrable experience working in a fast‑paced open‑spaces environment.
  • Good communication skills, can follow company policies and procedures, and provide accurate updates to your line manager both written and verbal.
  • Shows initiative and works well in a team.
  • Flexible, calm under pressure and has a can‑do approach to working outdoors.

Hours of Work / Work Pattern

1st April – 31st September: Mon – Thurs 08:00–16:30 with a 30‑min unpaid lunch, Fri 08:00–15:30 with a 30‑min unpaid lunch. 1st October – 31st March: Mon – Thurs 08:00–16:00 with a 30‑min unpaid lunch break, Fri 08:00–13:00 with a 30‑min unpaid lunch.

Level of DBS required: Standard. No security vetting is required. Not politically restricted. Does not require BPSS check.
